compatibility

Post by abraxis77 »

I'm a fairly new fish keeper. I have kept an adonis plecostomus, which I love, for several months now. I recently bought a syndontis multipunctatus. From what I have read, it seems like my catfish likes to live in groups. While my pleco is generally peaceful, it can get aggressive against other bottom feeders. Short of getting a new tank, would I be better off getting more mates for the catfish or holding off not to overwhelm my pleco?

The syno and the pleco do best in rather different water conditions, so I would definitely hold off. The best thing to do would be to house them separately.

Thank you for your replies. I will hold off on getting more multi's and get a bigger tank when the plecco get bigger.

you're not there yet, you should replace the Syno with another catfish as well

now you just put a hold on things

wich means you have a single Riftlake catfish wich should be in a group in the wrong water.

if you like yno's; best trade him in or -say- Synodontis angelicus or S schoutedeni or so.
very good looking Synodontis that will thrive in the same water as the South American Acanthicus.
also; these are territorial fishes that do just fine on their own.

Sidguppy makes a good point.

Also, larger S. angelicus aren't that hard to find, as they are often bought a small fish by unsuspecting customers that don't realize their mature size and temperament. A bit like the Acanthicus, large ones are often less expensive than the "cute small ones".

With the potential size of the adonis, might it be best to get rid of the syno and not replace it with another? Maybe you could save the money from selling the syno and feeding it, to buy the monster tank the adonis will eventually need.
