whats a good cory to get out of this list

some one on our local canberra forum has put up a list of corydoras species for sale from a wholealer

i was wondering what could go into an:
aquastart 500 tank with:
pair of bluerams
3 redtail rasboras
2 otocinlus
3 LG6 whiptails which i thnk will be removed depending on some info etc

are two of my faves & superb corys - depends on the price really as you'd want a group of half a dozen at least

C. similis are nice, as are C. metae. I've bred the latter, but not the former.

but it would also depend on how much they are, since you would want a large group of what ever you end up chosing.

C. atropersonatus,concolor and gold lasers would be my choices, but I would be beware of the blue rams.

I like the Sterbai and green laser corys myself.

Really good quality C metae are smart-looking fish. With as much black in the dorsal as possible and a nice sandy base colour.

what would be the robust cories that could go into the tank above?

Out of the list, my favourite is C.reynoldsi and C.sterbai.both are gorgeous cories.
As for the most robust cories,i would go for brochis "green" and C.simulatus.they can grow to a good size and will not be a problem sharing the tank with the blue rams.

Trilineatus are really common - they are bred on large scale in SE Asia (e.g. Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, etc). They are not labeled as C. trilineatus in the shops, as this is one of the most common Catfish to be sold under an incorrect name: it's usually seen in tanks as C. julii, but if you ever see a tank with them, you can be 99.9% sure that they are C. trilineatus

But they should be easy to find locally to anyone on this forum, even in Australia, I'd say.

c. trilleneatus are very common in australia too. but like mats said they are labeled as jullii

Thanks! I'm new to catfish - cories are my favorite. I've not seen them at the aquarium store I frequent. I've gone to other aquarium shops, but that was when I was focused on bettas and never went back to them when I saw how horribly they kept their bettas. Most places keep their bettas horribly, I'm afraid. Tiny cups of filthy water. In this one place several bettas were flopping around in practically no water and a couple were dead. I couldn't bear looking at that and walked right out - after getting the guys to put water in the ones that were still alive and taking away the dead ones.

I have enough cories for my tank at the moment, but when there comes a time to restock, I'll definitely keep my eyes open for them. Would they be listed as "false Julii"? In the Drs Foster & Smith catalogue I get, in their live aquaria section, they list what looks like trilineatus as "false Julii". And is that what is pictured on the Hikari sinking wafers package??

Yup, "False julii" would be one of the common names used for C. trilineatus. And I'm sure if you look in your LFS, you will find some under the name of C. julii - I've only seen them sold under correct name once or twice.

if your tank is on the warmer side for the blue rams I 'd suggest the sterbai.
Really beautiful cory imho.

This is easy...dump the rams and company and get as many as you can afford. Corys rule, cichlids drool. Just kiddin'...sort of...
Figure out what water temp your tank's going to be kept at for the other inhabitants and use that as a starting point to narrow the selections. Then possibly look at whether you'll be trying to breed anyone in that same tank. I've variously had habrosus in a tank with angel eggs and dwarf cichlid eggs where they didn't bother them. Can't say the same for most of the larger varieties however.
Also consider the contrast and colors involved. Black back ground and substrate or light sand and back ground. My kronei's all but disappear in a tank with dark Eco-Plus but show up tremendously well on pool sand.

As andywoolloo said, your rams will need quite warm water (>27C).

So, pick your

Corydoras

with care, as not many will tolerate water that warm, long-term.

in the end i decided not to get any because the rams are spawning constantly and the fry dont make free swimming stage because the father gets lazy after and the mother eats them

the father than decides to beat up his wife and then get paired up again later

they have paired up again and soon expecting eggs again

i want swartzi corydoras though

i was thinking getting rid of my breeding group of bronze cories and trade them for schwartzi to attempt to breed them
my bronze are in the tank with breeding bns and a heap of other bns and their own fry

Well, I got my trilineatus today! My local Petco had some and yes, they were listed as julii. I told the guy that just about every shop mislabels them. They are TINY! Smaller than my smallest pandas. They are in my 6 gallon eclipse tank with the new betta I got. He is gorgeous! He's not quite a half moon, but his fins are really full and beautifully formed. He's royal blue with a black face. Betta's can be real characters. They interact with you to an extent and will follow your finger, etc. He loves his new tank and is all over the place. So far he's leaving the oto's and now cories alone. My first betta was aggressive and ate the oto I put in with him. My last betta was very mellow. I hope this guy stays that way.
