Anaspidoglanis macrostoma and co

Post by Mika »

It has always been mystery to me how make difference between several anaspidoglanis species and auchenoglanis species.I know auchenoglanis occidentalis for sure but others seem quite the same to me.I´m sure that pictures in planetcatfish catE-log showing various anaspidoglanis spp. aren`t correct. From the pictures it is hard to tell the difference. They have been taken mostly from aqualog african catfish book.Aqualog catfish picture books(all l-numbers...) has been famous containing very much errors.Pictures don`t show always right species.I have 4 Anaspidoglanis cf. macrostoma.Where can i get some scientific papers (revision)or advices to identify my catfishes?Few years ago i had 6 of those and to me it seemed that i had three different species. They did have some little differences in shape and colours/spots. I´m quite sure that i had different species butt what they were?
Well i wish i was a catfish

When and by whom was the genus Anaspidoglanis erected? Is it generally recognized as valid? (FB, if I recall ccorrectly, still uses Paraauchenoglanis.)

Anaspidoglanis was erected by Teugels, Risch, de Vos & Thys van den Audenaerde (1991). Type species is Auchenoglanis macrostoma.
Only two included species:
A. boutchangai
A. macrostoma

The Planet Catfish Catalog lists:

Anaspidoglanis balayi
Anaspidoglanis guttatus
Anaspidoglanis macrostoma

So the first two are classified incorrectly, yes?

Dinyar,

A check of Teugels et al. (1991) shows that both balayi and guttatus are Parauchenoglanis, not Anaspidoglanis.

Bugger.

That's what I get for not double-checking aqualog sourced IDs.
