What's your New Years Fish Plans?

Post by L number Banana »

I plan to clean up some of my newbie mistakes

1) Insanely loud OUT of the bedroom. I can't believe they haven't smashed the glass lid when they go for a jump the minute the lights go out. (it's tempered shelf glass now) I even tried lowering the water so they could freely jump and splash without hitting the glass. Think it made them jump more! These fish must need an obstacle course to keep them busy. Being moved to the biggest tank once I find a reliable lid.

2) Getting rid of my adorable corys once I find a suitable substitute to keep the sand as clean as they do. Too many babies! I'm going to be known as the bag lady for the number of times I bring donations into the fish stores. I think they see me and go  ! I can't find any hard-to-breed corys in my area for obvious reasons but will keep looking. Thought the bumblebee would eat the fry but apparently can't keep up. He's fat though :P . Sand mover suggestions?

3) Will stop collecting the Oddball Farlowellas now that I know they can hybridize :( (More on that in near-future posts)

4) Restarting disastrous first attempt at the Pictus Tank.

5) Buying a male Apisto Dwarf for the little lady fish.

6) Continue going on mini-trips to find local fish. The Central Mudminnow is doing well and has no trouble fending off the pond fish vacationing in the basement pond. He needs some buddies, hopefully a Madtom someday.

7) Checking to see if the local University needs some volunteers of any kind in the Geology, Marine Biology Depts or at the Phytotron. "Will work for reference collection library passes :beardy: " Can't hurt to ask.

What's everyone else's plans or goals? Anyone thinking about fishroom plans? Got a breeding goal that you want to share - aside from all of us still throwing love-arrows towards the hoplo tank for the grokefish challenge...
Building a tank, stand? Putting off a fish related chore and need encouragement?
Got new fish goodies for Christmas?
Racing, shoes and fish. Nothing else matters. Oh, and bacon.

2010 for me will see hopefully ! the completion of the new fish house and the setting up of the two large tanks I bought as a bargin then had to put a building up to house them !

This is one of the large tanks that needs a tidy up but good news is they are both watertight !

Hmm. Good question.

1. Breeding L128 - well, I hope so, and the male is definitely showing a bit of odontodes.

2. Breeding L411 - one female looks very fat (or it's a male with bloat :( - but I don't think so )

3. Getting L183's from Neil. Maybe a couple more L128 too.

4. Setting up the new 320 liter tank I got from Martin.

5. Get rid of all but one pair of Bristlenoses.

6. Convince my LFS to not stock large plecos that compete vs. the Ancistrus - this will give me an outlet for them...

But all of that should be happening in the next several weeks, and then there is another 30-40 weeks left of the year... Who knows what will happen then.

1 - taking a leaf outta Mats' book & posting thorough, comprehensive answers to other peoples posts, rather than being lazy & putting short answers - (unless i'm busy at work)

2 - sort out some photography of my synos for debate on the threads of PC

3 - continue with my shrimp set-up (all advice welcome)

4 - set up my empty tanks & try to finally agree with myself what i'm gonna put in there

5 - get more articles proactively written for PC

6 - take proper notes on what fish i see, where they are, how much, when at retailers

Intresting thread, i can look back on this and hopefully i can say ive achieved it!

1, Breed my L204 and get a few more, I have a very hairy male in there and my female wont go near him.

2, Breed my L168 hopefully this will be my year for breeding success!

3, Set my double tank rack up with a sump system, not sure yet about it, but i still need convincing.

4, Get to an auction this year, so if any one knows of any please post up.

Hmm, some good plans there. Makes me want to expand my list but then doing too much at once may have been what got me into deep water to begin with.

How did everyone do last year?

Mine's easy; Found catfish, found Planet Catfish, bought fish, tanks, got addicted. :D

Last year, I set up 7 new tanks with a (outside) volume of 107 liter each, making a total of about 750 liter. Hopefully my new 320 liter tank will go in this year too. Fishhouse is full up!

I acquired several new fish:
L128 x 3
L106 x 2
Unknown Ancistrus x 3
Several corys and some Dianema urostriatum.

My plans are to continue to breed or try to breed my L46, L134. L201, L260 and L333. My L46 and L201 are not yet full grown.
I'm already breeding the others.
Raise a new batch of Sturisoma aureum.
Keep my Corydoras hastatus colony going.
I wouldn't mind adding Ancistrus claro to my collection and possibly L10a.

Mass produce Apistogramma trifasciata. This is a great beginner's Apistogramma species which is easy to breed, very attractive and matures in a relatively short time, as little as 4 months.

I am raising 12 F1 wild Royal Blue Discus and plan to continue to breed them true but will also hope to have a couple spare females I can use to breed with my wild Alenquer Discus and cross one with a male Stendker Brilliant Turquoise Discus in hopes of getting a result that resembles a wild Royal Blue and colors up earlier than the pure wild types to become my standard discus for sale to my regional fish shop customers.

Get my packaging approved by FedEx so I can ship year around over night to all parts of the lower 48 states.

Maybe get my website, http://www.apistomaster.com, built. I have it started but want to change hosts before doing more work on it. It is planned to be more of an information site describing how I raise different fish and announcing when I happen to have some fish available for sale but that is not it's main purpose.

I'm thinking of building a true river tank and get some more spp. It'll probably never happen though as a) the LFS's here never bring them in, and b) I wouldn't know where to put it. :D Perhaps when I retire.....

Looking for some new interesting plecos for my 110 gal loach tank, perhaps some or , or perhaps just some more .

I want to find the key to get my L204s to spawn. And how to get my tatia perugaei in the mood as well.

And redo my 90---I want to add L200s, farlowellas, and whiptail cats, but I don't know if the raphaels will bother them to death.
But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I will be unique in all the world..... You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.

So far, for the holidays, I've gotten two Baryancistrus demantoides, and two Hemiancistrus subviridis, and today I just picked up 5 x L128's. I think I'm pretty fully stocked for my 125. Now it's time to get rid of some cichlids and make room for some breeding. :D

For me I have several, hope I can at least accomplish a few of these.
I would like to keep better track of the growth rates, pictures and when I buy fish.
  • 1. Spawn my L091's
    2. Grow my Flagtail to 10" by next year.
    3. Grow my L600 & L114's to 8-9"
    4. Grow my Altifrons to 6-7" by this time next year.
    5. Aquire a larger group of L333 Porto Do Moz
    6. Spawn my Corydoras Adolfoi
    7. Work on a better filteration system for my big tank
    8. Build a lid for my 135G show tank
    9. Setup a 4x2' tank in the bedroom with a Aquaterra Background and some rays.
    10. Write more detailed reviews of the equipment I purchase.
    11. Take more pictures of my fish
    12. ave some cash to go back to the catfish convention
    13. Aquire a colony of LDA-01
    14. Aquire a nice colony of large L128's
