There still isn't a picture here, so if you don't mind sending your pictures to Jools and me (webmaster / mats at planetcatfish dot com), along with your full name.

Not that I'm doubting your ID, but did you see this post?
Steve seemed to think the fish may be something else, and so just thought it worth checking so we don't add the pictures to the wrong ID.
As I said, no offence meant - jsut thought the post worth pointing out.

M. carlae, or not (I'll leave that discussion fo everyone else here who is more qualified and experienced than I) these are beautiful fish. I have never given thought to such a thing before, but what would be involved with importing them through US customs? Is such a thing even possible among hobbyists?

There are obviously many more questions I would need to find answers to, before I could undertake such a thing, but I can't help but think how wonderful they would be in a species tank.

Although the pattern matches I can't be certain they are carlae due to the serrations on the pectoral fin spine being different. This doesn't mean they are not carlae but because of this I can't be 100% sure due to the two very similar species. As a judge I would accept them as carlae, but whether that is enough for the site, I'll leave that to the moderators. Either way, they are beautiful fish and worth the price!

Timberwolf: You should be able to get , either from a LFS or mail-order in the US. They may not be COMMON, but they should be available somewhere - and not very expensive. I bought some for Martin S recently at £12 for 4, which makes less than $5 each. I think they come in big lots tho, so a small shop with little turnover may not want to buy a bag with 200 fish.

Steve "The.Dark.One": I'm a little bit confused now - the fish came from Phil "Pikeman", and supposedly are the same species for all of them. Are you saying "I'd accept them if I was a judge", but that you also do not believe they are what they are labeled as, or are you saying there may be more than one species in the lot?

Thanks, Mats.

I have never seen any form of microglanis in an LFS, so I'd have to look elsewhere.

I know that many of you do it all the time, but I have never done mail-order business for fish. Since I know noting about it, the thought of buying a live animal sight-unseen and then entrusting it (or subjecting it) to the package express makes me nervous. What are the risks involved? I'm sure that there are horror stories out there; what kind of protections do you generally have?

Obviously, buying mail-order fish is a step or two more risky than buying basic things mail-order, and of course a bit less certain than buying fish in the LFS. Is there a good independent FS around your part of the world (sorry, I've never been in that particular corner of the US, so I have NO IDEA what it's like).

And by the way, it's highly likely that you won't see these in a tank somewhere - you will only see them if there are 100 in the same tank, otherwise, you only see the label... They are pretty good at hiding... I see the ones I'm holding for Martin if I surprise them with the torch at night - I'm sure they do move about during the day too, but not that often.

There is only one IFS around here that I Know of and I consider the quality of their fish to be suspect, at best. They are worth the visit, if for nothing else than to see some of the animals they have that are NOT for sale, like an albino cobra, a 90 pound tortoise, and a gaboon viper.

My better half and I are looking to relocate back to the Portland, Oregon area and I do know of several stores there.

Thanks again.

No, they are all the same species. I am a fish judge and what I mean is if I was judging I would accept the ID, however I cannot be certain they definitely are carlae, but on the other hand I can't say they are one of the other similar sp either. Some Microglanis are so similar it isn't possible to say with 100% certainty what species they just using photographs.
