does any one have any ideas on a catfish that is a predator that will live in a 48"x18"x18" tank for life?if so then can any thing be kept with it in that size of tank?

Pimelodus pictus or Pimelodus ornatus? Microglanis, various woodcats, tons of small bagrids, the list is endless...

Sure, if you like your fish confused with driftwood by guests, go ahead

You could easily keep 4-5 in that size tank, since there is no aggression toward conspecifics... It's impossible for things to fight if they never move

Don't get me wrong, they're one of my favorite cats... ultra low maintenance, neat looking. You only need to feed them every 2 or 3 weeks. But after keeping C. bankanensis for a few years, I've gotten kind of disillusioned with them.

Do you want activity, or something that behaves like most catfish and lies up until dusk or feeding time, whicever comes first?
What filtration do you hope to have on the aquarium? What sort of decor do you intend to use?
When you say predator, do you want something that is happy with bloodworm or do you want something that will snaffle large earthworms and mussels etc.?

Your hand would turn into a prune before anything happened. e-cat, Chaca chaca are ambush predators from India. They're as close to a toad fish as you'll ever get in a catfish. They're quite hard to find in the States though.

I loooove this fish. Both Chaca chaca or Chaca bankanensis.
well-worth setting up a speciestank for.
unfortunately they're hard to get over here too, for quite a number of years.
when they were available now and then; I wasn't able to keep them, because I had only two tanks, and not the money for their foodsupply.
They only eat live fishes, so it's a bit of an expensive appetite.

but these days I've got both more cash, more tanks and also an unlimited supply of cheap fish (it's easy getting young Convicts or Jewels from other members of the cichlid-club).

I've known a 8" Chaca once making a 3 1/2" Glyptopterichthys gibbiceps disappear, so any tankmates must be chosen with care. And tankmates that'll tacke fish also; will outcompete the Chaca for food.
A similar sized Pleco (6-8", obviously NOT 3 1/2

) or Callichthyd (adult Callichthys, Megalechis or Hoplosternum) would do fine, I think.

Last thursday I saw a few others (non catfish) that are also high among the wishlist, once I got another speciestank:
-Eleotris marmoratus. beautiful, looks like something usable by the US army as a stealth weapon.
-Batrachus grunniens! Now THERE's an evil, poisonous pet, and it growls too...would make an excellent catfish! HH; care to re-classify this as a catfish?

iv already got an electric catfish so im looking for something that will swim more filtration will be a fluval 404 and a whisper 30-60 if more is needed ill get it of up grade. the decor doesnt matter i have lots of rocks and bog wood.when i say predator i want something that wil take the large earth worms . beef heat, shrimp, the occasional feeder.

i thought it was chacca chacca iv seen one once about a month ago and was going too get it but they said it only takes live food and feeders arnt cheap around me, and i dont have any more convicts and other cichlids right now, iv always liked catfish and since i got my e-cat , he made me want all cool catfish, i also had a asian red tailed catfish that killed an arowana of mine so i sold it, that was acool fish and mean as hell i had too wear fishing gloves cleaning the tank cause it would attack me every time.

Belodontichthys aren't easy fish for the beginner. They need lots of tank space, live food and are particularly sensitive to bad water.

You mean Allenbatrachus grunniens? You'd need a brackish/saltwater setup to properly keep this fish.

Yeah, I know they need a fair bit of salt to survive.
Would make a neat fish for a speciestank, though.

dont keep it too begginers fish, iv been keeping fish for years mostly cichlids,snakeheads and piranha, iv just started too like catfish more and more latly iv keeps just common plecos, roayls, corys, pictus and clombian sharks in my brackish tank and now my e-cat that has won me over to catfish.

If you're thinking of putting it in with your e-cat, fageddaboutit! E-cats don't like company. Our 4" e-cat paralyzed a larger fossil cat -- also quite tough as catfish go -- in no time at all.

I have the same experience with a 6" Malapterurus killing a foot long Clarias batrachus.....

definitely one for the speciestank, and the best way is just a single one. They're not exactly highly social. quite the opposite, I'm afraid....

pleco because of "pleco curse" curse lore (if we don't have this on a FAQ somewhere we should) and cichlid because it's a swear word!

I cant see any probs with the Limas. They are more lively than the Chaca Chacas from what Ive observed.

Although I really like mofo-ugly things like Chaca (the weirder, the better), I think when it comes to rewarding fishkeeping and having a few very gracile fish that interact with you when you feed them; go for Lima's.

iv head of a certain bicher being able too not be affected by the e-cats shock, has any one else heard of this?

i was looking in the cat-e-log and came across pimelodus clarias and pimelodus ornatus, who would either of those fish work out in a 48"x18"x18"?
if they wil be fine what kind would be best and how many? also i was thinging of putting them with tinfoil barbs good idea?

They would. Since these fish reach about 12", I'd think two is probably the most you can put in the tank with any comfort.
