I`m planning on breeding Brown Lace ancistrus in a 20 gallon tank

How many males and females should I put in the 20 gallon tank

What is a "lace ancistrus", do you mean

Ancistrus cf_cirrhosus

(perhaps the "long fin") version.

Ancistrus temminckii

comes from a region that isn't normally exported for aquarium trade - an indication of this is that there are three pictures of this fish in the Cat-eLog, all from the same owner, that got the fish from a non-commercial collection expedition, not from a regular shop. If the fish is sold as A. temminckii, it's is almost certainly A. cf. cirrhosus that I linked to above - in which it's very undemanding with regards to husbandry. For a breeding project in a 20 gal tank, I'd say no more than two or three (1 male and 1-2 females), as you will pretty soon have fry that fill any remaining space in the tank.

Of course, I could be wrong - I haven't seen your fish, and when I say it's not A. temminckii, I'm just playing a statistical game based on the fact that the common fish, A. cf. cirrhosus as it's called here on Planet Catfish, is available in most shops around the world from captive breeding, and that true A. temminckii are extremely rare. They look pretty similar, but they are not the same. Most Ancistrus species are almost impossible to identify without detailed information on where they came from - that is if they are wild-caught in the first place. I recently posted a list of 12 different species that were intended for the Cat-eLog, to see if any of them could be identified.

In answer to the first question, you can start with one male and two females, this works for pretty much any ancistrus species. A single male and a single female will work as well, it just may take a bit before they figure out they're the only game in town.

That fish is DEFINITELY not

Ancistrus dolichopterus

- it doesn't have the right colour, nor does it have the right number or rays in the dorsal fin. I will try to fix the wiki site too - at some point in the not too distant future, I hope.
