Bristlenose ID
Hey guys,
A friend of mine bought this as a normal BN. They definitely are not. Which brings me to question what they are. We do have "starlights" here in NZ, but I somehow doubt they would just pop up and sell as normal bristlenoses!
Any help would be appreciated.
PS- Sorry about the fuzzy pics, it is all they could send me.

Re: Bristlenose ID
Hi Phoenix44
They are listed as Ancistrus dolichopterus and priced as per a normal bristlenose.
I think they came on the list last week, so they sort of did just pop up and sell as normal BN, however they are not Ancistrus dolichopterus (Starlight).
I did not try to further identify them.
However it is easy to see how the retailer might just list them as BN, with extra spots.

Re: Bristlenose ID
I think at some point in time, in some place, just about every single bristlenose species ever exported have been sold under the name A. dolichopterus or A. temminckii. It's just the two commonest names in the common aquarium books, and often the picture of the fish in the book doesn't match the name. Since shops, wholesalers and such do not necessarily [particularly in the past] have the latest, most upto-date Catfish specialist books when they decide what name to put on a tank, they just use whatever book(s) they happen to have, and the first matching picture is often taken as "Ah, that's it..."
In this case, I'd agree that it's most likely .

Re: Bristlenose ID
After seeing the latest picture, I too think its the rio ucayli. I got another pic today:
Nice orangish colour on the fin
I think they look so awesome, and even better without the heavy price tag
to everyone for your help!
Geoff- so these should be available more increasingly now?

Not sure, I am not an importer, just have an addiction that needs feeding so I usually get a much appreciated call whenever anything new and in my area of interest appears on the list. If I have the space then ........phoenix44 wrote: Geoff- so these should be available more increasingly now?

Welcome to my world.krazyGeoff wrote:just have an addiction that needs feeding
I am currently planning a tank (for next year) with blue phantom plecos, whiptails and a pair of discus.
Only if I could stop being a student...
