Re: Breeding Leporacanthicus sp. cf galaxias L-240
All have hatched, and I think there are around 40 of them. Many will die, because many are under developed and some are just funny looking. I will do the final count in about a week or so as I move them to a raising tank.

Re: Breeding Leporacanthicus sp. cf galaxias L-240
This is quite disappointing to read, but I'm sure they'll do better in the future!
It would be interesting to see if the father L240 can do a better job!

I am not sure he will, but I shall try it next time. I decided before the eggs were laid to remove them just to make sure I got something. There are two problems with leaving the eggs with their father..DutchFry wrote: It would be interesting to see if the father L240 can do a better job!
-The L240s share the tank with a very large and aggressive Pseudacanthicus spinosus male. This one can of course be removed, but catching him might be difficult.
-Secondly my water parameters are not ideal for hatching sensitive eggs. Ph is a bit high (around 7,7). I might use a combination of RO water and peat/leaves to sort this out.
I am not very disappointed as the first brood will be somewhere around 20 fry if everything goes as I think they will. 20 L240s are quite a lot of fish.

Tonight I destroyed all fry with problems, and counted 43 perfect ones. I am happy with that as my first brood

Re: Breeding Leporacanthicus sp. cf galaxias L-240
I would very much like to bring up really large broods of the species. I think fluctuating temperatures (26-30 degrees) and the fact that I used water from another tank (wasnt thinking) is the reason for the high death rate. Next I plan to let the male do his job like Cristoffer suggests.

Re: Breeding Leporacanthicus sp. cf galaxias L-240
Great news Haavard. Keep the updates coming!
Until recently I owned 5 young specimens myself. It's a beatiful species. They still had a long way to go before reaching adulthood, but I had every intention to get them to breed eventually.
Unfortunately I have moved to another house and I'm sort of forced to sell my fishes.

Very cool. I'm just learning about the two I got last night and was encouraged to see this thread. I hope to get a few more in the future and maybe try my hand at breeding also. Any updates?
Re: Breeding Leporacanthicus sp. cf galaxias L-240
Been following this thread closely. Congrats on the spawn and I hope you continual success.
L-240 is one of my favorite and woul love to keep them someday. Cannot committ a large tank right now to keep them properly. Maybe someday.
Good luck and keep the posts comming.

All is well with my L240 frys. They are eating flakefood, earhworm sticks, crushed peas etc. No problems as I can tell. I am really looking forward to the next clutch of eggs. It would be cool to raise a really large brood.

Haavard did you take your L240 eggs from the start and what method did you use to hatch them?

Re: Breeding Leporacanthicus sp. cf galaxias L-240
Hi you all,
I'm following this thread very carefully from now on, as I have a confirmed clutch of eggs of Leporacanthicus galaxias L007 from yesterday morning...
I will follow closely the instructions of Cristoffer (Mr Lepo's in chief ) and leave the clutch with the father till "hatching + 4-5 days"... It's probably the most difficult thing I ever had to do in fishkeeping.
informations to follow...

Well... I'll try my best to help Mr. Pseud's! My next challenge is L. heterodon and trying to get a functioning group of L. triactis.
Håvard... hows you're tricatis group doing?

Not yet, as I have nothing worth to say (for the moment) and no pictures (I don't want to disturb the male on his first time)...
but maybe, if all goes well, I'll wrap up some informations later on.

I gave them to Jørn Kåsa. When we were in Peru the tank housing them ruptured in the bottom glass, and all the L. triactis died. I will buy the species again some day, but only as probable pairs or trios.Cristoffer Forssander wrote: Håvard... hows you're tricatis group doing?

Re: Breeding Leporacanthicus sp. cf galaxias L-240
I want to share what just happened to one of my L240 females as a warning to everyone who keeps Leporacanthicus species.
One of the females was sitting unsheltered in the middle of my tank. From the coloring I could see that she was cyanotic. A small strip of cod fillet was visible in her mouth (I gave my fish strips of cod fillet today.) She obviously tried to get it out, but she couldn't. Because of her poor condition I could easily catch her, and pull out the 4x1cm strip of fish with my fingers. After returning to the tank she hyperventilated for a while, got the black base color back and swam into hiding.
When she was choking her base color was reddish/grey.
I wonder how to safely continue feeding my fish with fillets. Maybe I should use whole fillets for them to chew and scrape from or finely chop the fillets? Do any of you use fish fillets?

That was a narrow escape! Good job you saw it in time!!
Would be very sad to lose a female now they're started spawning.
I would give them bigger pieces of fish or smaller.
Thanks for sharing, it's an eye opener

I very rarely use fish for feeding. I prefer shrimps, given in small bites. Never had a problem with it.

Re: Breeding Leporacanthicus sp. cf galaxias L-240
Hi Haavard,
I occasionally feed fish fillet to my carnivores.
I feed it just like shrimp: on a screw.
Together with that line, I can remove uneaten stuff the next morning without having to search and dive for it.
Very useful in the five minutes before work.
This way, the fish have to chew it off and can´t try to inhale it (though that possibility actually never occured to me before).
These screws are stainless steel and are pointless (flat at the top), so unlikely to be a threat to fish.
Also very useful for feeding vegetables to fish..
Cheers, Sandor
EDIT: forgot one point: this way, the food stays reachable and doesn´t get lost in some small corner unreachable for largish fish..

it's really easy to use any use it for veges.
with prawns shrimp, just poke it straight throught the middlt through the whole body like this
----><)))))))-------
{this was really a improvised drawing on the computer , ><is the tail ending and obviously ))))) is the body}
that way the food doesnt constantly move around and such
hope this helps
