Pictus tankmates

Hey. im planning to put my5 pictus with, ulreys' tetra, diamond tetra, penguin fish, some corydoras, and some tiger barbs. are these good and do you have any suggestions on who would be better?? thnx!

These are all OK with the pictus. Some other fish to consider are lemon tetras, emperor tetras or hatchetfishes.

You may want to reconsider the tiger barbs,they can be nippy little things and may attack the pictus cats whiskers,small tetras may be eaten.

thnx-iwas wonderin about cardinal or neon tetras w/my pictus and i have heard many people saying that they have them and they all get along just fine.. if yu have neons or cardinals w/pictus tell me who they act

I once gave my girlfriend a small pictus cat and on day two it gorged itself on an entire fancy guppy and died the next day I don't think it was eating any of her standard fish fare, but I think if you feed them properly they will be peaceful. Forget to feed them and you'll be missing fish.

I wouldn't take the chance of neons with pictus, hunger notwithstanding.

ok.. thats good info from both of you and it both makes sense. and about territory issues... if i add the pictus as one of my last fish in the tank wouldnt it be more peacful caus the pictus havnt been running the tank and would be intimidated by the fish already there...... if that makes sense

general rule; stick to fish at least half the size of the pictus or bigger; if they're highbuild (like barbs or highbuild Tetra's, 1/3 is big enough.

But neon- or guppysized fish will be toast, even with wellfed Pictus.

Exactly like the wellfed housekitty still bringing in mice or birds.

You can take the Pictus out of the Amazon;
but how can you get the Amazon out of the Pictus?

wow-thnx... tha makes a LOT of sense.. specially the bringn the pictus out of the amazon... i have decided on my tank... im gonna have first neons to get the cycle going, they are inexpensive and when my pictus go in if they get eaten owell, after the cycle is ready put in my tiger barbs, then pictus, then bala shark.. thnx for all your help

Neons aren't the greatest cycling fish, they are a little fragile when just introduced, but if they're destined for death I guess that doesn't really matter, eh?

i just got 2 pictus catfish earlier this day,and when i took them home they adjusted very quickly to their enviornment and dwelled at the bottom of the tank like normal catfish. i went out for a few hours, and when i came home i was suprised to see both of them at the top of the tank partially motionless, with coiled whiskers. to me it seemed as if they were dying, so i took them out of the tank and put them in another tank of water. they seemed better because they dwelled at the bottom of the tank like earlier before, but their whiskers were still all coiled and im not yet sure what happened, and i'd really want to know if they will permanetly stay that way. can anyone please help me or inform me of any treatment? thanks anyways

--- i have 7 tiger barbs (and one of them is really aggressive) so i was thinking maybe the barbs had something to do with it.

This sounds like there is something in the water bad for the catfish (the coiled barbels are a sign of bad water). Have you tested your water lately?

it was the water and now after i changd it, it turned out to be my aggressive tiger barb tugging on the barbels of both of my catfish.

Thanks for your advice Silurus, but my tiger barbs ate one of my pictus catfish and the mutilated the other one until it died (it wasn't a pretty site). anyways for all you others, never keep your tiger barbs with the pictus (and it doesn't matter how many you have, although albino tiger barbs are an exception).

heh, those tiger barbs are nasty, I had a school of 8 that eventually got down to one survivor who'd had his jaw ripped off... nasty beasts
