Yesterday I arrived home with my fish. They are quarantined in 2x200 liter bb tanks with good filtration, aeration and a lot of wood. I am treating the fish with flubenol 15.

This is my list:
8 medium sized Panaque "shamper"
9 Very large L-204
6 Panaque "galaxias" Huallaga (very nice)
1 Chaetostoma sp. Huallaga
35 young Lasiancistrus sp. Huallaga
35 young Ancistrus sp. Huallaga
3 Cocliodon sp. Huallaga (not sure about species or genus)
4 loricaria sp. Rio Itaya
1 Hoplosternum sp. Rio Nanay
1 Peckoltia sp. Hullaga (L206 I maybe)
1 Large Pseudacanthicus sp. L25 (Tattoed across my back in Lima)

My camera is not working due to moisture damage, so it will be a while before I can photograph all the fish.

Tuesday 17/8-09

Our first and shortest expedition was along the road between Iquitos and Nauta.


The first biotope we visited this day was a small clearwater stream 77 kilometers out of Iquitos.
It was somewhere around here +- a kilometre






Our catch: Id of the different species would be nice if anyone has a clue.










We cought a lot of greenspotted ancistrus:

After collecting fish in the small forest stream we drove towards Iquitos to fish in a small pond alongside the road. Under the road there was a large drainpipe with bats. They weren`t happy to see us. In the pond we fished tetras and small Hoplias.
There are no pictures from the pond because my battery became empty in the batpipe.

The last biotope we visited on our way back to Iquitos was a rather muddy stream where we fished for something Alfredo called zebra peckoltia. It certainly seems to be Panaque changae. We have no pictures from this biotope.

Boulengerella maculata is my guess. They are sold as mosaic gars in pet stores.

Sure, but not in this location. Generally large animals only live in small protected areas of the amazon.The rest were hunted down and eaten a long time ago.

Yesterday I finished the quarantine period beause I could see nothing wrong (I probably didn`t look closely enough), and put my fish into different tanks.

Today I can see severe cases of normal whitespot on several fish. I am raising the temperature to 32-34 degrees in all tanks with new inhabitants.

Jørn and Ronny: Have a really close look at your new fish! I would assume you have the spots too.

We didn`t travel to Columbia.

The P. suttoni on the picture is allegedly from Brazil. The photo was taken at the place of a Peruvian exporter specializing in fish smuggled from Brazil.

Alligators are only found in the U.S. and China. The only true crocodile in South America is the Orinoco Croc and they have a limited distribution far north of where these guys are collecting. There are four spp of caiman in that area, but they are rarely a danger.

Speaking from experience, it is, however, a little alarming to pull one out of muddy water in seine net.

We started this 3 day journey very early. The boat driver picked us up at Victoria Regia hotel in the center of Iquitos, and we went to pick up the boat on our way to Santa Clara. The boat was a small leaking aluminium tub with a 60hp outboard engine. We met the two fishermen in Santa Clara.

The names and locations of the villages I have written on this map are not 100% accurate. We had no GPS.
