Nope. Clue may probably be a bit too vague  . Here are 3 more clues:

1) "Oh well", said the fairy tale fish, " I'll give you a light".
2) Last spring I bought a handmade dragon
3) Torbanite has already used one sp. of this genus before
4) It's listed right after Robin's friend

i) Remove one "L" from my genus and you have a genus of game bird whose feathers are sometimes used to make artists brushes.
ii) My specific name honours the fellow who described my genus.
iii) My adipose fin is absent.

Ha! Finally thought of a puzzle you don't get first time ;-)

iv) According to the paper that describes me, the first member of my genus to be found was thought originally to be a Bunocephalus. We're now classified as something else, indeed we're not even in the same family.

v) The bird has a long thin bill, is found in woodland & is quite well camouflaged. Various species of it can be found in Eurasia & N. America. Two of its feathers are used for extremely detailed/fine painting

New fish:

1) my pronunciation sort of says that I'm a stingy insect with talent
2) the above refers to the genus name (which is not explained btw)
3) my species name suggests I'm in between
4) the largest specimen measured was almost twice as long as "normal" specimens

Second clue makes me thing it's , but I'm probably wrong... If I'm right, I'd better set an easy one, as I have little (if I even bring a laptop) contact with the 'net for the weekend.

Good guess but, F9 not F9 so not a hexadecimal number. Your day job must be in software ? :-)
Carp37 wrote:Ancistrus ranunculus medusa pl*co?

F9 is the 9th Fibonacci number = 34.
Medusa was a goddess who petrified people (turned them to stone).
= L034 = Medusa Pleco

I was refering to a new puzzle, but I may have been too hasty. Anyway, let Carp do it. I find my own puzzles quite boring for I already know the answer

Oh ya...good save, we are both right, I would think yours would be tougher to collect and care for.

Okay this may keep you busy...getting back to Scoloplax... what family was Scoloplax dicra, which is the type species, first placed into.

When first recorded yes... Bunocephalus sp.-Lundberg and Baskin(1969) and then Scoloplax dicra when described in 1976 was provisionally placed in Loricariidae before Scoloplacidae

Okay where is Carp37?
