My small alpha male is fanning eggs again in the usual spanning cave

. Some have already turned white. He may have had the eggs for a few days already without me noticing. This time I will let nature take its course. Flock breeding the fish was always my intention.

I am not really optimistic, but there is a chance of success. It would be so cool to photograph the cave entrance as the fry are leaving the care of their father.

The last few weeks I have only done small water-changes with tap water. I have dismantled and cleaned the RO system for the summer. I have not been a great believer in triggering this species by rainy season simulation, and both the last and the first spawns halfway confirms this.

It would for sure. The egg clutch inside the cave looks a bit torn and messy, so I am not very optimistic.

The eggs got eaten yesterday, but it is nice to see them attempt to breed in the middle of the summer.

Sorry that the brood didn't hatch. But I agree that it's a good sign that they are breeding "any time of the year" and with little intervention.

I just removed the small male from the tank. He was a ladies man, but have not successfully raised any of his young. This must be a real bummer for him

The position of breeding alpha male is vacant.

I don't think that's what Haavard meant. I think he meant he removed the male into a different tank.

Sorry about the misunderstanding! I relocated the male so that others can take its place as alpha male, and hopefully do a better job of raising juveniles. I will keep him at least until one of the other males successfully raises fry.

UPDATE:
the fourth time this year a new bunch of eggs is getting attention by a male...but this time the eggs are coming from a second felmale. i choose her out of a group in the shop...and she is a female only 12cm small

Nice photo.

I saw a tiny fish in my L128 tank, but I strongly suspect it's a Ancistrus that has done the "let's escape out this drain here" into the sump and then gone into the other tank.

22 are out wiggleing their tail. 6 more to hatch...i hope the 6 eggs make it.
the male is back at it''s place in the tank!

Checking out mine last night pretty much confirmed my suspicion that it's another frigging bristlenose - if they didn't need water, I'm sure they would come out of my ears by now.

I can only really tell for sure by getting the fish out of the tank, and where it's hiding, that would mean tearing down quite a bit of the decorations. Not something I wish to do. I'll just wait until it grows bigger. But seeing as I have "escapees" in two of my four tanks in the other rack too, I'm pretty sure that's what happened.

hi mats,
just dont forget to feed powdered food from time to time as L-catfish babies need a lot of food to grow healthy not like normal bristlenoses. i put my L204 fry back into a inhanging tank to feed them straight 3-4 times a day...and what happened...they got massive stomaches and started to grow quite well...others died because the food in the maintank was not enough!

The small fish in my tank is DEFINITELY an Ancistrus - it was sitting on the front glass doing the usual Ancistrus eating thing this morning.

I haven't got any good photos of the tank, as it's hard to get to, and too much stuff that gives off ugly reflections on the front glass.

Today I got a new clutch of L200 eggs. I am trying to hatch them in a small aerated container with methylene blue. It is a crude method, but I hope it works.

What do you think is the trigging point to get teh L200s to spawn?
Any luck with the L128s.... they shouldn't be that different....

Presently I believe the L200s spawn all year and I can`t see any relation between triggers and spawns.
