Re: assassin snails breeding
In februari I started with 5. Now I have sold over 500 of them
So, no there not hard to breed. Just some things you have to know. They only reproduce if 1. there are anough snails for them to eat, 2. the temperature is above 26 degrees (belowe that the eggs will not hatch) and 3. if you have both male and female as they do have to mate first.
I find them great and very elegant but I'm also glad I can get rid of them. Separate them if you don't what to many baby snails

Thanks a heap for that, Jac!jac wrote: 2. the temperature is above 26 degrees (belowe that the eggs will not hatch)

My snails mate all the time but never had any offspring, now i know this has to do with temperature, as my tank will not get warmer than 23 degrees Celsius!
doh!
Greetings, Tim

Re: assassin snails breeding
You can see the difference between adult male and female snails. Female snails are bulkier and have a rounder shell. Males have a narrower, somewhat longer shell. But it can be hard sometimes. I'll try to look for a picture of a male and female to show what I mean.jerry58 wrote:HiCan you tell the difference between male and female assassin snails ?.jac wrote:Separate them if you don't what to many baby snails

I ment to separate the 2 adult snails. But ones the female has mated she can produce fertile eggs long after been separated from the male.

Re: assassin snails breeding
my plecos will kill assassins before they eat the ramshorns... driving me nuts.......so never found out if they bred easily or not. One of the tanks still barely have 2-3 assassins left in it out of 15 that I have purchased for that tank.

Re: assassin snails breeding
My L066 killed my Assassin snail before it could get at most of the ramshorns in my planted tank. Unfortunately, they prefer bigger snails, so I still have small ramshorns in my planted 15 gallon.

Re: assassin snails breeding
I have noticed that some Hypancistrus spp and Sturisoma make a dent in snail populations but not enough to completely rid a tank of Pond and MTS snails. They won't be putting Botia or Yasuhikotakia species of Loaches out of business.

Hi CortneyOwens,
The post by shamrock is 7 years old, and they haven't been active here for years. Don't count on them for a source. Alternatively, have you tried asking a LFS (local fish store) near you to order them? They shouldn't be more than $2-4 each. Also, you can check aquabid.com for assassin snails.
Cheers, Eric
