Ancistrinae

Post by Yann »

Hi!

A friend of mine received these fish in a shipment from South America (I shall ask him from what country?!)...
Any Idea, as sincerely it does not look like something similar to what I know....

It looks a bit like the original pictures of L101 (Hypostomus sp.?)

Hi Silverskip!

It could have been it but my friend's fish does not have the same body plate than on the fish pictures there...it also differs from having white black spot against white mark for my friend's fish!
Klaus: it coulde be one ...the only thing that makes me go against is the body shape, especially when you look the fish from the bottom...
Cheers

A young Hypostomus albopunctatus perhaps - certainly looks like a member of that genus. You need to find out if the fish came from the Rio Sao Francisco !

Hi!

I received an answer from Jon Armbruster, that rule out Dolichancistrus because it has only 7 rays in the dorsal fin.
He also told me that he had received several specimens of an undescribed species and probably genus ( still should be in the Hemiancistrus range and morphology) from Venezuela that look similar...
Still waiting for the origin!
Cheers

Hi!

Ok I received the inforamtion, this species came as a contaminant in a shipment of Hypostomus, they were imported from the exportator "Aquario" which is based I think in Rio!!?
Still waiting for the name of the species they came in with!!
Cheers

My other thought (L225) seems less likely then as it is from Colombia. I stick with my Hypostomus guess then. What's important here is that we get shots of the fish as it grows up and becomes more identifiable.

Hi!

Well Erwin seems to agree with the Hypostomus identification.
Obviously they (my friend) received several specimens of various size, but I don't know if this specimens is the bigger or the smaller!!

Looks just like the young Hypostomus Oliver from Below Water caught in Argentina a few weeks ago. H. rubropunctatus?

Hi Charly! Coping with the weather?
Oliver usually sends me pics of whatever exciting stuff he has picked up on his many and varied trips, so I'll have to ask him if it's OK to pass them on. Some very nice Gymnogeophagus also. I think he only sends me the pics to let me weep over them!
