L27 Longfin

Hi, I have recently come across what appears to be a "longfin" Royal Panaque, much in the same way they are now breeding "longfin" bristlenoses, (sorry i havent got any pictures yet) but this is in a batch of wild imports. How unusual is this?

Well, considering the widespread variants of "long fin", I'd expect ALL species of (bony) fish to be able to spout long fins. So it's likely that it's rare in nature (as it's a recessive genetic form), but not completely impossible.

I'll try and get a picture of it. I quite like the look of it, how much do you think it would be worth? the guy at the shop said it wasn't for sale at the moment till he could value it. I guess its about 3" long.

i think the value could be dependant upon who wants it for what purpose - if someone just likes the look of it, it is worth the same as any other, if someone wants to study it, compare with regular L27 etc it is perhaps worth a bit more. If someone thinks they can breed L27 & produce longfin fry (difficult as it is a recessive gene) it could potentially, commercially be worth a lot, but this would be extremely difficult - i suspect the dealer wants to make a little bit extra - this is after all a very unusual occurrance

Are you sure it's not L090? This Panaque has long filaments to its caudal fin.

no, all fins are extended, and the whole fin is larger. looks like someones bred it with a guppy, very striking. will try to get picture tomorrow.

I think this fish would be worth a LOT on the Asian market.

Without sterotyping I hope, I think "modified" fishes are more popular over there.

Absolutely, several thousand £ ... but I would keep it by my self knowing I was the only one in the whole world keeping a Royal Panaque with long fins.

The LFS owner has won the royal pleco lottery. That is an extremely rare morph as royal plecs are all wild-caught and not captive bred. That fish would likely sell for hundreds if not thousands of US dollars.

Now that is bizarre! Wow, never seen anything like that on a Royal. Can't say I'd want one at home, but the chances of encountering one for sale seem very slim.

Well Keg, I certainly hope that the guy at the shop doesnt read the above

It's all a matter of taste and it's a good thing tastes differ. If I had to pick one fish from the picture I'd go for the characin.
I do hope you'll be able to buy that Royal for a fair price. Let us know how things develop.

If I had to pick one fish from the picture I'd go for the characin.

yeah they were a nice characin, Kitty tetra (Hyphessobrycon loweae) if i remember rightly. they have it priced at £250, far outside my price range unfortunately

though probably not that unreasonable from what you guys are saying...

Too bad you're unable to obtain the fish, but I think you've made the right decision. Lots of other (and more important?) things can be done with that amount of money. Could a regular Royal be an option for you?

Actually, I could pull the picture from here and post it on the Cat-eLog page in a few minutes [1]. But we still need your real name to be able to give you proper credit for the image, so mailing the picture to Jools will be the best idea - that way, the picture and name are both in the same place.

If you wish to give credit to the shop for having the fish, please add which shop it is too!

[1] Only Jools can [currently] add new contributors, so I would not be able to this unless you already are in the contributor list (I haven't looked, as it's very hard to find based on username).
