Re: what am I?
One last clue (6) from me:
One of the African species meant in clues 3 & 4 has a number of pictures. 13 of them are made by 1 person. The name of that person can be found in my species name. Btw: although he has kept/still keeps (?) these fish, he's no registered keeper!
On the other hand: if you already are at that genus, you should know who I am.
That should really be enough clues

Re: what am I?
Hey torbanite, I got the family but still can't get the clue trail straight. A few posts ago Marc said that was the wrong fish but the right family: Pseudopimelodidae. Lots of '-glanis' and '-silurus' ?? Anything there ring a bell?
I clicked through a bunch of them but can't get the african connection
er, what's a ricky?

Due to some computerproblems, I was unable to come to this site yesterdat - and Í'm afraid these are still not repaired
I did expect the answer to be found sooner: the familie is known, and not big
another clue: 9) I'm amongst the largest catfishes in my river, but not the largest

Here's the list: Previously Listed Catfish
New Fish:
a. I'm a frequently mentioned catfish but I'm not available as often as my name is used.
b. I'm associated with birds in name only.
c. As my type locality, I live in an area of the world that been having a rough time since 2003. I live away from the conflict but it's happening in my country.

e. I look very different when young.

Nope, much less rare. I have many keepers but now I'm kind of tough to find even though my name is still written all over tanks at fish shops.Synodontis dhonti?

You're working too hard fixing all those bugs Jools, you messed up your clog
Jools :

Nope. The size is much closer though. Judging by the huge number of keepers, I was much easier to find a while back. Some people seem to have found a fish like me recently but most are hybrids.
Clue B refers to my common name.

It's maybe just a little bit more popular keeper-wise than the Cuckoo catfish but easier to mistake a hybrid for one of these when young. My town has these in 4 different shops - all are hybrids It's the only syno we see in these parts, unfortunately not the real thing. Too bad, it must be a nice fish, it has keepers in the triple digits...
Oo, I forgot about that bird reference, good one but not the right one. My fish has a bird reference in both it's common name and it's real name.Synodontis multipunctata?
