Hi Matt,
Your game is a rather successful thread!
I've kept the Captain's Chair warm if you'd like to take over. Yes or no is good with me. :)

The fin concerned is actually not absent and it's no Apisto you're looking for.

4) the first part of my genus name has something to do with a song by two relatives about Florence's last name
5) my type locality is quite odd

It does have a species page and by now it also has some synonyms

Your last guess has brought you the right genus; now find the correct species:

3) I share my species name with a small, S-Am c*****d. Part of this species genus name contains a word that means "dear"or 'love" in Italian....

Can't find the cichlid yet but I had a good read through Amati genus

Had this fish up on my last post until I realized it had synonyms and deleted the guess. Should I have left it? It does have the weirdest Type Local.

It's close to Te amo but not quite.

Re: what am I?

You guessed right

Clues:

1) One of my fins is playing hide & seek
Hence Latin name, which in this case translates into hidden dorsal
2) I have no synonyms but should have (and will have shortly; Jools, you're out for this round :D )
While searching for a fish I bumped into this one, which had the author between brackets and should therefore have synonyms, but hadn't. I edited the data; that's why Jools was not allowed to guess along for he sees the changed data prior to vetting them
3) I share my species name with a small, S-Am c*****d. Part of this species genus name contains a word that means "dear"or 'love" in Italian Nannacara anomala
4) the first part of my genus name has something to do with a song by two relatives about Florence's last name
Everly Brothers: Wings of a Nightingale, in which the wing part refers to Pteron
5) my type locality is quite odd
Market place.....

Your turn.

 Well, I made that hard for myself! I misread your language clue - thought you said Spanish not Italian...hubby is Italian so the phrase is rather familiar. I also thought you said the cichlids species name not genus - It was late.

New Fish:
A. I'm a Kaftka-esque fish.
B. My genus name could reference the name of a very important weapon in a popular book series. I'm mainly in the first book, the one that spawned the series of three others and the movies.

It actually said Spanish for a minute or so. I started doubting, looked it up and changed it into the correct language.

L number Banana wrote:I also thought you said the c*****ds species name not genus
I was indeed looking for the species (anomala); the second part of the clue was merely to hint at the correct genus (Nannacara), for there are quite some genera to choose from
But I missed an apostrophe in that sentence; it should have said: "species' genus name" (see below)

If I fill in Metamorphosis (A) and Twilight (B) I end up with a blood sucking (B) fish which is slim when unfed and bulky when fed (A), so here's my guess:

Nope, I'm not quite that creative
Looking for something more general about Kafka to get the second part of my name.
The weapon that will point you to my latin first name is so famous that you wouldn't find it used in as many different genera as The Twilight Sword. It's handy for people who don't like spiders.

Difficult. A broom would be a good weapon, yet it comes from a book series of 7..... Don't know any books about a swatter
Another clue might help.

C. The weapon would be about the size of a flyswatter. It would make a perfect sword for someone half the size of a regular person.
D. The latin word that makes up the second part of my genus is a tool that engineers would be fond of because it demonstrates mechanical advantage. It makes things easier when a person doesn't have the strength of an orc.
E. I'm a little fish with no keepers but there's at least one person that would find a home for me in an instant!

Oo, photofinish and torbanite streaks past Marc to the finish line!

All yours torbanite and you've already explained the clues very well so only one tip needed..clue E. Wouldn't this little fish be in Auchenipteridae heaven at Marc's house? And Sting is the knife in The Hobbit and LOR.

Your turn torbanite, list updated in a minute or two.

That doesn't sound good. Get well soon lil server.
I can't see the list either, so fingers crossed that this one hasn't been done before..

i) My dorsal fin is absent.
ii) I share my species name with a Corydoras and an Apistogramma,
iii) However, the Cory & Apisto would be surprised to meet me - I'm not from S. America.

I noted at least 5 identical species names in Corydoras and Apistogramma (acrensis, agassizii, gossei, nijsseni and steindachneri) of which gossei turned out to be the only possible solution :D

2) I have more pictures than keepers
3) The first part of my genus name can also be found in (an) African species

The Cat-eLog in general contain (mostly) fish that are likely to make their way to aquatic shops and our homes - it is certainly the priority when choosing to enter new species. The normal minimum criteria for the Cat-eLog is that it's got a photo - there are some that don't have a photo because it's either been originally entered into the Cat-eLog with an incorrect picture. Or because Jools felt like entering a complete set - for example, all species of a genus. But generally, new species enter the Cat-eLog when there is a picture available.
