Science News: Sisoridae - Oreoglanis hypsiurus

Post by Silurus »

Synopsis by Erwin Schraml

Oreoglanis hypsiurus, a new species of glyptosternine catfish (Teleostei: Sisoridae) from Laos. This new species had been previously misidentified by Kottelat (1998) as Oreoglanis delacouri. Good colour photographs of O. delacouri and the new species are included in the paper. This species is recorded from the Nam Theun basin in Laos. Oreoglanis are very flat suckermouth catfishes which may be interesting to aquarists. Members of the subfamily Glyptosterninae all dwell on the bottoms of swift-flowing mountain streams or in the riffles of lowland streams. Three other Oreoglanis species are currently recognized: O. delacouri (Pellegrin, 1936), O. macropterus (Vinciguerra, 1890), and O. siamensis Smith, 1933.
