Can you keep a group of 3 Synodontis ocellifer in a 55g?

For a while, yes. They should eventually grow to about 8" in size, which is suitable for a 75g tank or bigger.

Given enough rock, or wood/branch hidey-holes this should be ok for a good while - have you considered upping the number to 4 or 5 though as any aggression should be reduced further. A slightly larger tank in the end would be beneficial as Mats has suggested

Are they genuine ocellifer? A pic would help us ID them - i only mention it as i've seen hybrids labelled ocellifer recently

I agree with that, they aren't the most quarrelsome syno species, but not the most peaceful either.
