Help with Golden nugget!

Post by andy75 »

Hey guys,

Need some help with my golden nugget, Hes right off his food at the moment and i noticed that his belly is a bit sunken when on the glass, i tested the water and all seems normal, the temp is at 28, any ideas would be great, i really dont want to lose him!

Im feeding/trying bloodworms, and frozen prawns is there anything else that might take his fancy?

Cheers

You may want to medicate against internal parasites. Kisuri (?) WormerPlus is "aimed" at Discus, but works really well on plecos too.

However, these fish can get into a state where literally nothing restarts their feeding.

They are definitely more of a herbivore than omni-/carnivore, so feeding vegetable matter (have a look at my article about feeding plecos, link on the right of this post).

Im going to try medicating thanks for that mats, and i just hope it will restart his feeding again, from what i saw of his belly last night it doesnt look that good! The thing is though, he seems happy enough in the tank is this still normal?

Will be reading your article again, ive read it a few times now, and everytime i read it, i always get new ideas, cheers mats, (again).

Starved and parasite ridden plecos are often difficult to tell how far gone they are.
I would follow Mats advice but when it comes to Gold Nuggets, fish that are acting like your fish usually do not make it.
Treatment needs to be routinely done at the import level then resumed at home in a QT tank for 3-4 weeks.
10's of thousands of Gold Nuggets fail to live through their first year in captivity.
The Gold Nuggets are one of the most difficult of popular species to acclimate and keep healthy over time.
They are among the most irresistibly beautiful of the most popular pleco species but they are also among the most delicate.
