Can i keep a Bunocephalus coracoideus in a 29g community tank, or does it need to be bigger?

Short answer: yes (if your tank is not overstocked).

I have to disagree on them being in a Tanganyikan tank; both the water is completely wrong (reverse parameters), and Banjo's shouldn't be kept with Riftcichlids.

I would like to agree with you guys, but that was the only way I got them to breed, I wouldn't recommend it, but something like that may trigger it?

Hmmm - higher mineral content & radical pH change perhaps signifying an event in nature like moving to a river estuary or influx of salt water with a tidal bore type-of-thing???

I really have been baffled by that. I am constantly running my fingers through the sand to check for little buggers that may have been born, but I still only have the 6 total in the 33 XL (I own a lot of the 33 gal XL tanks because they are soo freakin awesome!). Do you think that this could be a trigger, or do you think it was a freak occurance?

Thanks guys, I'm not planing on breeding them, I just think they look cool, and wanted a new addition! Plus I've got my hands full wit my malawi tank!

However counter intuitive it may seem to breed Banjo Cats in a Rift Cichlid tank may be, the facts remain that few have bred Banjo Catfish and most are unplanned. However since your Banjos bred in the Rift lake Cichlid tank it would be wise to keep an open mind and not stay tightly wedded to any preconceptions. I wouldn't suggest keeping the Cichlids together with them but trying to breed them in their kind of water may matter.
It is possible there are lessons to be learned from your success and maybe more experimentation with unexpected water conditions may
provide a better understanding of what the actual triggers are for breeding banjo Cats.
There are many who have collections of breeding size Banjo cats but have never bred them.
I know I have given Banjo Cats a try a couple times but despite having obviously egg laden females with males, I have never been able to spawn them.

I tried the "benign neglect" route for breeding them, but I couldn't help myself. I kept their water too clean.

I have them in a species only tank with a very soft, fine substrate. A lot of hiding places seem to be important, too. Their antics are quite something.....when they finally decide it's time to move. At the present moment, day or night doesn't matter. For the first years, it was nocturnal or nothing. Now, it's whenever they're fed. They even eat sinking wafers now. I thought it was a snail eating them, until I actually saw them go at it.

Mine are always out now aswell, and eating things I wouldn't expect (mine actually LOVE algae wafers for some reason.) I still haven't found any fry, but I know the females are really bulky again, so maybe there is a chance of some egg lying in the near future.

I have the sneaking suspicion they may find the fry good eats.

I see females bulky one day, thin the next....and nothing to show for it. I'm thinking of removing some of the Java Moss to a small tank to see if anything comes of it.

I want to remove a male and female to a small tank with only leaflitter, remove the male and female after the eggs are laid (or the female becomes skinny again) and see if that works.

I just got a group of 5 more yesterday and already have eggs (now a total of 5 females and 2 males) They actually even released eggs into the containers I bought them home in. Just hope the plecos won't eat them (well the plecos can't fit into the caves that the are in, so I doubt that will happen.)

If your talking about common plecos don't worry, they don't eat meat, they only eat vegi, and plant matter!

No, I don't own any commons. There are some L201's growing out, L129's and L127s all in there currently until the other tank is moved to my new place.

(Note: the L201's, and L129's are about 1" tl)

I'm not trying to sound like a newb but holy $hi+!

BTW: I just now found the "L-numbers.

It's been a while, since I left the whole catfish section of this hobby and went to african cichlids, (due to tank size an funding), I forgot how much I enjoy it.

The only thing i got now is, a clown plec, a southamerican bumblebee, a couple commons, some albino chocolates, soon a L010, and maybe banjo SM, and maybe some Africans of some sort.

I love my tank of South American Bumblebees. They are the best looking catfish I own (IMO), but definately the worth the tank set up for them. The easiest way to get some nice plecos (if your in the US) is to watch aquabid. I have gotten some nice groups from there for dirt cheap.
