hay i got a little tiger synodontis the other day he/she is about 1inch long and just want some information on them

Tiger synodontis isn't an established common name for anything i can think of - i suspect it may be a hybrid with a newly made-up commercial name, like zebra syno (for instance).

A pic would help us be precise

There has been tanks of tigers here but I think they are a mixture also. The ones I have seen are very tiny and I cannot tell what they are or geta decent picture, I have tried. They are always small and fast and up against the back corners of the tank in the shadows.

I moved this to the African Catfish section, since even if they are man-made, the parents certainly originate from Africa.

(or any juvenile synos with that barred pattern).

nope it looks nouthing like that it its more of a dark brown and big black dotts on it

the ones labelled tigers here do not look like eupterus babies or the two links you posted.

They are more chocolate brown with black markings. I will try to get a picture of ours in this town in case they are like the OP's.

Best thing to do is fed them up with bloodworm and when there a bit bigger post a picture ,
they really could be anything ,
but proberbly something common as all the rarer synos in the congo are not being fished .

the other possibility is to go back to the shop you got it from and ask him for the latin name on his shipping list and where were they imported from ,
if its not africa then i would be thinking its a hybrid as ive never heard of tiger syno before either

They were gone from my LFS a few weeks ago when I went , replaced by some made up name of synos .. Sorry.

Bumping this back up. Picked up a pair of these guys over the weekend and seeing if any of you can provide more details on them.







Oh, country of origin was Asia and these are mutts from some sort of hybridization. Any idea of what the parents could be? Also, anyone who's kept them, any additional information on their max size and other relevant husbandry?

Yes, they certainly look hybrid. Not sure what the parent's would be - unless they look very similar to one of the parent species, it's often hard to say - could be that one parent is S. decora, but far from certain.

Care should be similar to other Synos - will eat most things, will be mainly nocturnal, probably won't eat any fish other than possibly tiny ones - it may be territorial, but not sure. It will probably grow to about 6-10"/15-25cm - it's hard to say exactly how big it gets without knowing which two species the parents are.

It looks nice, so it's understandable that the breeders do produce these. But then, one would suspect they could just as easily have created a genuine species by using both parents from the same species...

Does remind you of the

Synodontis decora

I'm curious though to see if as it gets older, the bars split into patches/spots. One of my young Botia Almorhae http://www.loaches.com/species-index/botia-almorhae started off with a distinctive YOYO pattern, but it's now becoming reticulated as the fish gets bigger. It'll be interesting to see if this happens.

Edit: I'd say keep them in similar conditions to the Decora and see how you go. Hybrids can be tricky at times in terms of care, and which parents they take after.
