Some species like Leporacanthicus triactis fans all the time in the cave without eggs, but I think Hemiancistrus fans only when they have eggs.
I have never seen fanning outside the cave like on your video. Maybee he is trying to attract the females

Re: Sexing Hemiancistrus sp. L128
I acquired my eight L128's in Nov 05' and they were 3cm in length, so I'm guessing they were 3-4mths old then which now makes them just over three yrs old now.
There tank for almost first year was 100ltrs, a small time in a 250ltrs until moving into 600ltr for last 18months.
I lost one of my largest fish 6 mths ago. I guessed male at time but now consider female.
I saw some of the larger L128's that came here about a year ago and while they were as big if not bigger than my biggest fish, I would have put them as a far younger fish- their extra time in the wild, whjilst mine growing in tanks I saw as obvious reasons.
The growth rate of mine differ per fish. In fact it seems the colony has a heirachy with dominant male, female and diminishing sizes down through the ranks. This is my presumed large female, with 2nd shot ventral view.
The next 2 shots of my presumed large male.
Next three shots of Fishes # 3,4, & 5- fishes# 6, and 7 are no more than 8cm.

Yesterday I got 5 L 200 highfin and these are indeed spotles on their tail. these are a Baryancistrus
However, L200 refers to 2 species, and the other could very well be the above

Well done Edlund
Did they hatch?
My fish are slowly but surely maturing.
Fish nr 2 and 4 has become definite males. I can id them from above in a bowl of water using the photos as reference. Fish nr. 2 and 4 will be auctioned away in February 2009.

Well it was a time ago i updated this topic.
I got from the batch 8 alive youngsters thats are around 3cm now.
Slowgrowing little bastards.
Have couple of pics that i want to share.
Some of the fries and som of the sexing of L128.
Pretty easy pics to decide the sex of the fish.

Re: Sexing Hemiancistrus sp. L128
Congratulations.
I'm hoping my trio will eventually breed, but they have only been in my posession since Saturday (can you tell I'm very proud?).
