as far a guy in a shop teached me, the males of the L200 should have a thicker (in diametre) pectoral fin than females (of course this is only possible if they all have the same size)...as i checked my female and a few males he could be right...and of course the males have quite a bunch of odontodes on the pectoral end...

it is still faning (this morning) it is faning now for three days, i just see it's tail hopping up and down slightly but he's busy

soon as i pinch the eggs after day 6 ! i will make a massive tank cleaning 100% freshwater some almond leafes...
how did you kept your fresh hatched babyes ? in a empty glass (in hanging) tank??

to farid and haarvard. for whatits worth. a buddy of mine over at plecofanatics.com called zcliff is building fry savers for only 30.00 usd and made to order any size you want complete w/ sponge filters and suction cups to mount inside the parents tank. Im ordering 3 for my breeding tanks and incase you get some eggs that need tender care this fry saver works wonders. I made me one for myself couple months ago when my adult king tiger kept kicking out eggs and the fry saver kept my little ones safe and much easier to feed . since I have made me a fry saver Ive cut down fry deaths to about 2 or 3 for every spawn when needed it helps cut down on deaths greatly. He has a thread showing the fry saver in forsale section of plecofanatics and goes by the name of Zcliff on there. great guy and also makes some wonderful caves any size you want and can make them out of just about anything for any type of species. Last night I went shopping for items to make up my species only L-200 tank. Im going to go with 5 at first I believe. 2 males and 3 females. Haarvard curious to know if you'd fooled with the L-128 blue phantoms yet? also is your hemiancistrus hi fin?

Farid yes that what Im talking about. them look well built and very nice.. I need couple of them. Did you say you bilt the ones in the pics ? If so how much for one. I need one to fit into my 20 gallon long and a 30 gallon long tank about 2 feet back to front in width. The current one I have sucks and causes more problems then its worth. I used a frysaver much like yours, with oak leaves for the fry to hide in.

Yes, I am trying to breed L-128 as well. No success yet. Maybe next winter.

also is your hemiancistrus hi fin?

You must be thinking of Baryancistrus demantoides (L-200 "hi-fin") . It is a totally different species. There is no such thing as a high fin Hemiancistrus.

I also keep 7 Baryancistrus demantoides (L-200 "hi-fin") and intend to breed them.

hi guys
made a huge water change before going to work with softer water...they all still wiggled their tales before i left, some eggs i will try to open tonight maybe tomorrow...

as udo and other catfish breeders told me it can help to take the eggs out let them on a humid toiletpaper and let is dry for about 3min. if the shell is getting a bit shrinky they drop the egg in colder water usually they hatch, as the skin get's shocked . but you're right Havaard to open a L397 egg is much easier...i guess they just need more time, as the babies have the size of a young L201...

i cant wait to check tonight...

i hat 200mS in the tank after the 2 time waterchange of about 60% it will be atound 260...i guess...i havent measured afterwards... cause is does not really interests me how high the conductivity is afterwards as i also use to breed betta splendens or sturisoma festivum in notmal tapwater!! P. laticeps works as well so i usually make my water harder after the hatch of catfish fry...as in two weeks later it will be softwater season again for the next stimulation to get a new generation

i still got 39! maybe one more could die as it has a little bloody mark in the back ...all others stard to get greyish ;)

i still can't beliefe it ...and i have to say it is actually not as hard as i thought in the beginning
the only thing to worry about is the male to be carefull with the eggs and the skin of the eggs that i just a bit too hard...somehow. but i left three eggs for another 12 hours laying on the ground and tried again to hive them a hands in the evening...easily they popped out!!

so i think it is important to let the babies grow inside the egg until they are really ready and stable enough not to get insured during the hatch...
as the first ones were laying around in front of the cave hardly developed...they looked like a egg with a little pinky worm on top what means to me these wil for sure not survive it...and the havent!!

That is interesting...so your water is so soft...I would have thought it would be more softer than this...it is nice to see that it isn't so extrem...

I would have thought that the young might suffer from the difference of conductivity as well ...but obviously they are doing fine...which is great...

i also ask myself who is breeding easier the ones with a ANI/KATI water softener (dont know the word) of the ones with a reverse osmosis ...as in the ANI/KATI system almost salts re gone...while the osmisis system still leaves some of the minerals in the water...so before i've used a "Welfare earth" mix...

i got this one second hand the machine shows water quality levels and is made for drinking water quality!

so this is my mixture for all my softwater...in the tank i got max..260ms!

the babies are getting a greyish colour!
the babytank is set up with riverstones full or algae...soon as they start to react for food i will move them over...
and the food is also mixed: Artemia (without shell), spirulina tabs and plancton tabs... the rest of the food will be spontanous


here you see one egg as it's quality looks very good just after i emptied the cave...

since two days i had no more loss of the babies. they all look well. pics tonight.

at the moment i got about 60 of the L397 but only about 6pcs of L2, over 70 L134...etc. as my groups lay eggs every three weeks
i'll see that i can make pics for a new thread tonight.

what kind of food did you start with?? with what size do you think i can move them to a 30L tank ?? or would you leave them in the small glastank (in the big one)??? the size of the inhanging one is about 29x24cm...

I gave them crushed peas, deshelled artemia naupli, spirulina flakes and the jbl stuff Janne suggested earlier in the thread.

A word of caution: I probably killed a few fry by giving them powdered tetra discusbits. They loved it, but looked like a picasso after feeding, and some died. I can`t be sure if the powdered discusbits killed them, but I won`t use it again.

maybe the discus stuff was a too heavy load. I dont know actually if the L200 LF should be fed mostly with vegi or meat...as mine go for both like crazy...i have spirulina/artemia flakes and bits...i'll try both. maybe the stomach does not manage only meet as discus granulate has a high meet percentage??
