Please sex my L134

Post by GW_NL »

Hi,

I'm trying to sex my 4 L134's (Peckoltia sp.). They're approximately 8/9 cm.

On basis of body shape my guess is one female en three males. But I'm not sure....

The 1st, 2nd and 4th are males I'd say, based on their hairy bodies. The rear half of the 3rd fish is out of focus so it's hard to tell. A clearer photo of that one would help.

I think you have 3 males and 1 female.
L134 males never get very "hairy" so body shape has been most useful to me.
I raised about 180 last year and have kept about 36 F1's as future breeding stock. I have 2 males and 3 females set up in a 20 long with 3 caves.
My impression is that they may be seasonal spawners. Mine started spawning late in February or early March then last spawned early last September.
I'm hoping mine resume spawning again soon.

I would say that you have at least three males and the thrid one is hard to tell as it is out of focus. The males are usually hairy and the females are smooth when well conditioned and ready to spawn. I have to breeding colonies whcih spawn every 31 days and usually I am getting double and triple spawns in the tank. I currently have about 300 of them as they are one of my favourite L numbers. When they are ready to spawn watch them they tell you when they wnat the water change and usualy you do so and wake up in the moring and you will have eggs. Mine have been spawning regualrly for about 2-3years now. They don't like it in the really warm summer months though it just gets to hot for them. lealea

Tnx for the info.

I'll try to take better pictures later this week, but no promises

All four of them have bushy tails, but the shape of the first one is definitely different from the others... so I'm still guessing one female.

They're for sale btw....

Unless... Apistomaster do you think I could put them in a 100*40*40 cm tank?

I still have doubts about selling them.

Your tank is larger than the 12 X 12 X 30 inch 20 US gallons tank I use for 5 breeding size L134.
