CSG 30th Anniversary Convention

Post by Coryman »

March 2009 may seem like a long way away to many, but it is getting ever closer and for us all it will be a very important month. Not only will it be the time when we will be holding our Spring auction, but it will also be the month we have our annual convention.
The 2009 event will be a significant milestone in our history, it was in 1979 when a small group of members of the Catfish Association of Great Britain from the north west of England decided to form a area group of the association. It will also be ten years since the group went fully international and changed it's name to the Catfish Study group. To mark the occasion we are putting on a very special event.
There are full details under the Convention heading on the CSG web site http://catfishstudygroup.org/core/convention_2009.htm, so please check it out. This promises to be our best event ever, so don't miss out, get your bookings in early.

There are couple of changes to programme for the forth coming CSG 30th Anniversary Convention. I have posted a new banner, which now shows that we have secured the services of Ray 'Kingfish' Lucas who will be our after dinner speaker at the Saturday banquette.

There has also been an additional feature for the Saturday morning CSG Marketplace. There will be a number of sales tables, where a limited attending conventioneers will be selling their tank bred or surplus breeding stock. The numbers of tables we can allow are limited so anyone who intends coming for the full weekend and would like table space, for which there will be a small charge. Please contact me before booking your ticket.

Glad to hear your coming guys.

For those who are staying at the hotel for the full weekend; Ian is taking the bookings, and quite a lot of tickets have already been purchased and hotel rooms also booked with Ian. Needless to say that there are only so many rooms at the hotel, triple anniversary year and all that; many have already booked.

Hi Folks,

Just a gentle reminder that the CSG's 30th Anniversary is just around the corner and to get the best possible prices you need to book in before the end of this month, after which the prices revert to the standard rate.

If you haven't looked at the package already then here's what you get for your money (Full weekend ticket £59.00). Friday & Saturday evening three course dinner, Saturday & Sunday carvery lunches and all day tea & coffer for both days, Oh! and don't forget the eight superb lectures we have lined up for you. On top of this there's the great company not to mention the beer. Click on the link here for all you need to know, or just e-mail me.

Looking forward to meeting many of you.

I am sure that with the amount of money the CSG are charging they can come up with name badges in the welcome pack that we've to pick up before 18:30 on the Friday. :-) I'm just saying that to wind up Ian. However, it is true that it's vital for such events to ensure repeat visitors, and engaging with people there helps that greatly and is greatly helped by big old name badges. But then you will all be wearing your Planet catfish t-shirts then won't you?!?!?

At the PVAS event they also put where you are from and also your planetcatfish username on the badges which actually really helped a number of people pick up conversations. We are, after all, not all equipped with thick skin.

As in previous years all delegates will have a name badge, :) however it will be just that, a name badge. :( If I am still organising future events I may incorporate such things as location and website handles, but this could be a bit of a nightmare to implement, especially if there were several web sites involved. However, Jools, you have sown a very nice promo/sponsor seed with the web handle idea. I think a web site could actually sponsor the name badge printing incorporating there site logo. I have not as yet started to lay out the name badge so it's not too late, so I am open to bribery, I mean offers  We currently have four aquatic web sites in our sponsor programme. Maybe Planet catfish would like to be the first, having said that I would need all those PC members that have signed up to the convention to forward me their PC handles and or local society name. I am not about to go looking for member details as I already have enough to do.

All sounds a bit one way to me, I mean, PlanetCatfish is already sponsoring the event, is not being paid anything to publicise the event (which we clearly are) and, let's be honest, is the leading site at least in terms of size, but also members etc. As the other sites are run by committee members, who are involved in approving or rejecting financial decisions, I'm not minded to pay any more money to the CSG.

If I recall, the reason the CSG exists is to further the sharing of knowledge of catfishes. The CSG doesn't exist to make money but appears to be asking to charge a public service website to allow event participants to interact more easily at the event - so I think you've gone too far on this one Ian - can I just ask folks to ask around for Jools and I am sure we can all work each other out!

From my time when I was on the committee, it was continuously discusses how to make the group more accessible to people and get more people along to meetings - this doesn't seem like a step in the right direction for us shy retiring types!

Hi Everyone,

There is a change to the discount booking deadline. Actually the date was set based on previous years conventions, which were all held in February, this is my oversight and I will hold my hands up to this.

The new deadline will be 1st March 2009 so all monies paid for bookings made before this date should be submitted at the discounted price.

My apologies for any inconvenience.

Such has been the response for convention places, I have now reached the point where we can only take three more hotel bookings for the convention. These and the discounted ticket price will end on Saturday at midnight. Anyone still wishing to come to the full event will need to make reservations at another hotel, which there are one or two near by.

Day tickets will be available at the door for both days.

I hope they've got that extra keg of John Smiths ready :D

To all delegates coming to the convention,

There will be a booking in station in the hotel foyer on Friday and one in the mail convention room on Saturday and Sunday. Here you will collect you convention pack, which will contain a convention programme, name badge & lanyard, convention badge and or shirt if ordered and in accordance with your booking request, a room docket, lunch & dinner tickets. Also with the compliments of Hikari, Aquarian and Tetra there will be a few goodies as well.

The paper work is complete, my bags are packed, fish are caught and I am ready to move out.

See you all soon.

My bags are not packed yet, and I've only got vague plans as to catching the fish. But by bedtime tonight, my bags should be packed, and the fish will be caught tomorrow morning (EARLY!).

Question: Is the hotel staff going to be upset if I bring an aquarium (60 liter) to my room?

@Mats,

Bring the aquarium in later after you've checked in...

I am in the area, packed and just about to get out of my monkey suit and into my fish convention gear. Heading off to Pier tonight to see what super fish await my trembling credit card.

Jools

PS Damn, forgot to bring my "I love catfish" T-shirt - mind you I did remember to pack my kilt!
