small asian cats in mixed aquarium

Post by ballmorph »

Hi, I was wondering if there were any suitable small asian cats to go in a mixed aqaurium with a Betta, microrasboras and Y. sidthimunki? that would preferably not eat or distrupt my plants if poss!

Thanks

Hi Ballmorph,

I have no idea about availability in London but Rama chandramara or a Nanobagrus Sp. should make a good addition your tank.

take care with mixing little catfishes with Botia sidthimunki

those are a lot more assertive than you (or I for that matter) think....as Marc recently found out when his sidthimunki's decimated a group of Corydoras hastatus and C pygmaeus.

a small slowmoving fish like Hyalobagrus won't stand a chance.

I agree with sidguppy on the sidthimunki being ultimately too assertive. I'd go for something a little bolder but still small like or . That said, I don't know what size the Microrasboras are, so be careful with them!

I know that these are found in most LFS in the world, and yes one that most of us keep or have kept over the years, and one that is now usually overlooked.
But; may I suggest:

When they are in great condition they take on a blue hue to them, and one that would be great in a tank set up like yours.
They don't cost much to purchase, so a group of 6 or 8 would be in order (if your tank capacity is OK)

Thanks guys, yep I have noticed my sid's being quite assertive. I do like the Kryptopterus minor, it says that they like to be kept in schools of 6+ animals. My aquarium is 36"x12"x12" there is one Betta, 7x Microrasbora galaxy and 5x Y. sidthimunki do I have enough room to add some without overcrowding?

Thanks

Actually they do have a dorsal fin, however it is tiny & quite undeveloped

6 or so looks like an easy fit to me.
