Synodontis longirostris
I went into a Petsmart last week and noticed they are now selling Synodontis longirostris (SM). The (SM) listed after the name I'm taking to mean small. They list the maximum size as 6 inches. The Cat-eLog doesn't list a size but other searches I've done list the maximum size as 20 inches. Is there a dwarf race of S. longirostris or is someone in for a suprise?

longirostrus
Buyer beware! I was in a lfs yesterday and spotted some obvious S. multipunctatus/? hybrids that were labeled as Synodontis ?. I asked the manager what they were, and he said they were sold to him as petricola, but was definitely aware that they weren't petricola, and were in fact hybrids. He contacted the seller about the mistake and his displeasure. The seller couldn't take them back as he wasn't a local wholesaler, but actually was from ... can you guess? ... Czech Republic!

You can get authentic ones here, at least sporadically. The long snout is what sets them apart. The one I used to have learned to take food from my hand; the only syno I've ever had that would do that.corybreed wrote:I have no seen Synodontis longirostris in years

I didn't buy, and I don't have any pictures. They definitely weren't eupterus. Could be a hybrid. Didn't have the adult coloration of longirostris either. They were only about an inch to an inch and a half long. Does anyone know what the juvenille coloration of longirostris looks like? If I'm nearby the store again I'll try to get a better look.

I was back by the store yesterday and stopped in for another look. From what juvenille pictures I could find of S. longirostris I would have to say that these are in fact the same. I asked the manager about the 6 inch max size on the label. She stated that it was in fact a misprint and that these fish would reach 20 inches.
I was just at my petsmart and saw the same thing, how much were they at your store... $14 here. They got some at 1" and 2-3 @ 2-3".
I came searchin for info as well. I was just as shocked to see 20"+ on some sites. Ill have to get a cam as they dont look like the pics here or on some other sites.
edit...
ok, 1 did look like this
would $14 be a decent price?

I saw the same fish at Petsmart. The mouth does not look like this:

Looked like an eupterus hybrid to me.

Re: Synodontis longirostris
Here's the fish in question. I bought this fish at petsmart around 18 months ago and he's just now about 4.5" long.

Re: Synodontis longirostris
yes nothing like longirostris , looks like the main part of this fish mix is ocellifer !
