can a common share?

Post by Complecs »

I have a common (Pterygoplichthys pardalis), unsure of his age but is approx 7+inches long. I recently added what I was told was a baby L14 (Sunshine/ Goldie), this is only 4months old and is still very very small, he was purchased as he was in a pets@home, and I felt there were far too many chavvy families looking at owning him (I'm a soft touch for these fish I'm afriad) anyway, I have a smaller tank which I was planning on moving the L14 to for a short time whilst I get the funds for yet another big tank
anyway, what the question is, the L14 has made himself very much at home in the current set up and the common doesnt seem to care that he's there (the tank is a 300l juwel rio), how long can I safely get away with these two sharing? Should i move out the L14 into the other tank as soon as it's cycled or is he ok where he is for a while?

Params of the water theyre in is:
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 5
temp: 26*C

heavily planted set up with real canyon rock, bogwood and a few coconut houses. black substrate, black background.

The fish are both fed (separately) twice a day Hikari algae wafers, and once a week fresh veg (usually courgette)

Tank mates are neon, cardinal and african moon tetras (who are all fed flake/pellets and a treat also once a week of frozen cube food - currently red plankton)

The commons colouration is deep brown and he is not showing any signs of stress to having the new tankmate, the L14 is just black with yellow/white (unsure as hes tiny) spots and he does spend his life in the canyon rock for the most part, but is steadily getting braver, so i'm putting this down to new environment rather than anything else tbh

I will be popping some pictures of the baby pl*c over to the 'id' section as soon as I can get some, but easier said than done at the moment as that rock is pretty big, and he's pretty well attached to it

any help on this matter would certainly be appreciated

thank you

I have had both good and bad experiences with sharing tanks between different species. The key is to make sure that both fishes get sufficient food [assuming tank is big enough that they don't end up with a water-chemistry disaster - a RIO 300 is sufficient for fish up to about 10", so your pardalis WILL outgrow the tank unless you mismanage the fish].
