LOOKING FOR SYNO-LONGIROSTRIS ?

There are a few i've not mentioned, but what do others think - is this inded the case? Or is it different in your area or country?

Wholesale Tropicals has recently had

Synodontis ornatipinnis

. Last time I was there I bought both of the ones they had. I'm going there this weekend, and I'll bring up the topic of longirostris.

Nice one Chrysichthys - i saw the Ornatipinnis there earlier in the year but i think they were still settling as there was some w/spot evident, but they did look good.

There are still quite a few species available but just not as many as 15 years ago - L numbers definately seem to be in focus at the moment.

I got my S. Pleurops seven months ago. It had been in the lfs tank for at least 18 months, if not 2 years. So the demand obviously wasn't there for it. Since I got it it's almost doubled in size in my big tank, so it must be happy!

Well yes, high demand generally equals reasonable supply & vice versa - i personally can't understand why this species is not more popular as i have found it a superb fish to keep. peaceful, not bad looking, undemanding of conditions & still genuine with no involvement in hybrids AFAIK. it gets to a good size too & makes a good show fish.

There's one in maidenhead Wheatley in one of the sump tanks thats been there for an age but is not displayed to it's best advantage

My Pleurops has grown a good two inches since I got it in October last year, now measuring about 8" TL. It has to be the the least shy of all my Synos, seeing it every day. It does have a rather dull pattern of almost uniform brown most of the time, but one look at that face...! But I'm probably preaching to the converted. Definitely a mellow fish.

yes great syno the pleurops but not seen one in the shops recently its one i would buy for the collection if i saw one in cheshire,
wilmslow garden centre aquatics has a good selection of synos but he can be a bit on the expensive with some of them i think he must ship them over with his malawi and tangy cichlid shipments as he has a large selection of these aswell,
last time i was there he had ,angelicus,acanthomias,atterimus,ornatipinnis,multipuncs,petras,nigromacs,velifer,njass,plus a few others i wasnt sure about there identities but never seen a pleurops there i think he is mainly from the war torn regions of zaire and congo areas so not going to see it often in the uk untill the fighting has stopped and people can go and catch them again .

if you are in the cheshire area its always worth a look ,
he has some nice synos in there that he must ship in with his malawis and you may find something a bit more unusual and im sure they are all african wild caught.

If you do head to Wimslow you'd only be 30-40 mins from Pier Aquatics which if you've never been is always worth a look, from there you're not too far from BAS in Bolton so you could make a day of it!

Indeed - albeit my geography is quite poor i am a fairly regular Pier/BAS visitor!

I rang Wholesale back (following up my query when I was last there). They've checked with all their suppliers, but still can't get hold of a longirostris. They're going to keep an eye out for it, though. It's the sort of thing they would get in anyway if they saw it on a supplier's list.

According to http://www.tropicalfishfinder.co.uk, Maidenhead Aquatics@ Wembley have Longirostis in stock. Have not phoned to confirm, so it may now be out of date.

i already know of this he is 10-11 inches long they have had him 2 years but will not ship door to door i would have to collect it myself and 7 hour round trip is a bit much really for me .

it is £65 and he will not move on that i asked him already .
if it was not so far away i would have it no problem but costs to london and back makes it more than double the above price.

The utterly crazy thing is that i was going to visit them today whilst i was at civil service sports day in chiswick.....before i broke my arm & couldn't compete..........

I'll buy him for sure, if they can ship him to Maidenhead Wheatley. They sometimes do ship fish from one branch to another.

Is there not a Maidenhead near you that they can ship it to? If, as Chrisichthys states, they sometimes ship to other branches, it must be worth asking the question?

no sorry mate they are all in the south and the chap said after having it in the shop for 2 years they wouldnt ship it anyway so i guess that applies to any great distance from branch to branch.

The spread of Maidenhead Aquatics encroaches ever northwards. There are branches now in Widnes, Wigan, Blackpool, Sefton and Woodford Park, Stockport. If possible you could try going into one of these and asking them if they can have it transported to them for you. It may be more successful doing it that way than ringing the Wembley branch. You don't know until you try!

just spoke to darren at wembley and they will not ship to a northwest branch .
which is what i expected really as i am sure he would of mention that idea when we spoke last week when i ask him would he ship via same day carrier.

thanks everyone i have a few posibilities now and maybe the director of the stockport branch may help me as he travels to london on business often and has collected expensive fish before for northwest customers.
