Two weeks in Sumatra

Just returned from two weeks' collecting in Sumatra. I have a ton of images (both fish and habitat shots) for the Cat-eLog, but here's a sneak preview of two among those to be added.

Some more pics of catfishes in less flattering light taken in the market at Muara Enim. I've seen Belodontichthys dinema of about 40 cm SL in other markets this trip (the ones in the pictures were smaller).

These are Bagarius yarrelli steaks next to the Hemibagrus (and that's my foot in the picture). Note the characteristic yellow flesh of Bagarius.

Here is a large (about 70–80 cm SL) Helicophagus typus in the market at Sekayu.

Freshly-captured Kryptopterus macrocephalus have a vivid yellowish hue.

What an exciting trip! The photographs are wonderful: the H. hoevenii is my favorite - it has a certain luminous quality.

I like the shots of the food fish, too, and I'm glad you included those. I'm looking forward to more details of your trip. Are you collecting for a project related to your taxonomy work? I hope you will post more to this thread.

HH - what are the 'lumps' on the flank of the Helicophagus typus - that look like ribs sticking out of a malnourished animal? Clearly this was a well fed individual

Those are indeed the ribs, but this is typical of all large pangasiids you see in the market. Gravity makes the bellies of large pangasiids sag against the ribs, making them look emaciated.
Many of these large pangasiids were still gasping in the market.

I think the habitat shots are just as important as the shots of the species themselves...

You can go ahead and add that habitat shot (my bad for sitting on this). I have also emailed you a bunch of additional habitat shots from my Sumatra trip.

The only catfish I ate on this trip was pecel lele (deep fried Clarias, in this case cultured C. gariepinus). Pretty decent if done the right way. On previous trips to Sumatra, I have eaten tapah (Wallago leerii) and baung (Hemibagrus nemurus). Can't remember what else I ate, but I don't think I ever ate any of the smaller species.
Oh, I tried patin (pangasiids) as well. Too oily for my liking.
