Hello everybody! My L129? Questions and ID

Post by Leucosticta »

Hello!
I'd like to post some pics... these are my new arrival, named as L129, Hypa debilittera, and they looks like they really are.

What do you think about them? I noticed they are a bit shy, and i am trying to understand if they effectively eat or not... which food is better to give them? At the moment i keep them with some young ancistrus (L144, Lda16)

Meaty food, such as frozen bloodworms, shrimp wafers/pellets (sinking variety) - and I'm sure Larry (apistomaster) will suggest earthworm sticks.

:D thanks...I'll keep trying and i think I'd better put snails in another tank cause they are so big and so fast :? :? and these small fishes are quite shy.

You confirm they are L129? I've seen a 129 pic in another topic and they look completely different...

I agree, now that you mention it, that it doesn't look very much like L129 - it's probably one of the other species - perhaps L401(or is it L400 - I always get those two confused) is a better match? Someone else with better knowledge of the Hypancistrus species may be better at getting the correct ID.

It looks a lot like an oddball I received with some L66 or L333. I no longer have it. I traded it to Barbie last Summer but as Mat said, I did feed it earthworm sticks which it loved. When I posted this photo for ID I think most thought it was Hypancistrus sp Rio Curucui/L400, if memory serves. Here it is again for sake comparison. It was really camera shy and I had o lure it out with food but then the Heckel Discus would get in my way so I never did get a better shot.

it's ok, it's not that i wanted L129, it's just because i saw these fishes and liked them, the only thing i am interested in now is knowing if they'll get biiiiigger then L129 (7 cm?) even if i don't think so.

Do you need new shots of some body part for sure?

uh in the L-numbers list there is this pic http://planetcatfish.com/catelog/image. ... ge_id=1189 that is pretty similar to mine.... argh those animals are too similar :P

I think your fish is , the bodyshape match perfectly but it has a little nicer pattern then usual. The eyes is to big to be a L316 and the colours is to distinct black and white to be L270, Larry's pictures shows a L401 from Rio curua and L400 have a more delicate and slender bodyshape with a lyretailfin...so I really think that the shop put the right L-number.

I just got in a shipment of L340's from Colombia. It contained L129 (that always happens) and what looks very similar to yours, and another one a bit different yet.

it is a very hard group to be very sure of if your collector/exporter isn't careful!!

To me, your fish is not an L129.

The striping on my L129's is similar to AndrewC's pic. The topic I posted previously had photos of them stressed out. They've since darkened considerably but the base colour is not white/light gray. They're more light brown/tan. I keep mine over a very light substrate which may affect the colour as well.

Great plec's regardless. =)

The pattern on the back is more or less the same: number 3 has a spot in the half circle, numerb 2 has the same line as the one in the first pics but is darker (and i am pretty sure it is a male cause he's as long as the other ones but is more 'hairy' (sorry but I don't speak english currently

Hey I have a little question again.

These fishes are quite thin (i don't know if it's correct... I mean the opposit of plump) and i tried with different food but it remains always there: pellet, bloodworms, tabs and so on...

I fear they are not used to eat artificial food anf i am worried about it cause it seems they don't eat at all. :| :| :|

It would be good to be able to offer them some live white worms or black worms but if neither are available you might keep trying the frozen blood worms and minced live earth worms. It may also help if you could leave the lights off most of the time and feed most of the food at night. I would try this until I saw some signs that they were eating well and show a fuller belly.
