Fantasticfins:
Very nice setup thanks for the pictures they are very much appreciated.
Couple of questions:
How did you induce the L333's to spawn?
What are you feeding the fry?
Thanks again for the visual setup.
Happy hobbying ,

Couple of questions:

I let the tank get dirty and then do a large water change to induce spawning. It takes between 6-9 weeks to feed heavily and get the tds up higher so when I do a water change, there is a drastic change in tds. I use tap water which is ph7.5, gh 300, kh is on the high side. I use a sponge filter and glass bottom tank set up for almost all of my fish. Make sure the fish are happy when you are letting the tank get dirty.
I feed the fry newly hatched live brine, tetra micro crabs with cyclopeze, tetra colorbits/tropical granules, wardley flake, spectrum grow, and 2 foods from uncle ricks(pro grow fry and better than brine #3)

Re: L-333 breeder set up and fry
It is hard to tell from the pic, but are you using powerheads to create current? I always wondered how important they really are. Thanx

Re: L-333 breeder set up and fry
I use sponge filter only. I change the amount of pressure on them regularly to create changes. I can get the water moving rather nicely with my air driven filters. i don't think current is the key to spawning them. I think it's proper diet, good water quality, perameter changes (mainly in tds), temp, and habitat.plecoboy wrote:It is hard to tell from the pic, but are you using powerheads to create current? Ha, now you got me re-thinking all my setups. It would be less costly to just run an airpump. Congrats on all your spawning success.

Re: L-333 breeder set up and fry
What size are your breeding tanks?
I have started collecting juvie L's to raise and I will have my fish room all set and ready by the time they big enough to breed but I am stuck for tank size.
Yours looks great and imitation is the greatest form of flattery.
Regards,
Brett

Re: L-333 breeder set up and fry
I breed most of my fish in 29 gallon tanks or 50 breeders. The L-333 are in a 29 gallon tank. There are 2 males and 3 females. I may have to graduate them to a larger tank because they are getting larger.

Do both of your males spawn when you keep them in the same tank or just the dominant one?Fantasticfins wrote:I breed most of my fish in 29 gallon tanks or 50 breeders. I am just setting up new tank for L134, I have 2 males and 4 females and I was wandering if both males would spawn in the same tank.
I would split them up but other tank I am setting up for L260. It´s always the same problem, not enough tanks.

Re: L-333 breeder set up and fry
Hi Luka,
My L134 are in a 20long, same foot print as a 29H, 12 X 30 inches. I have 3 males and 2 females and both females spawn at usually about the same time so far. I am using water very similar to Dale's in chemical parameters and am withholding water changes for several weeks then begin frequent water changes. Spawning usually soon follows. The main difference in our set ups is that I use one airlift sponge filter and a power head driven sponge filter. I use about 1/4 inch of sand substrate, some Malaysian wood and three spawning caves.
I feed the breeders earthworm sticks, frozen blood worms and live black worms. I feed my fry earth worm sticks and chilled bbs. The chilled bbs fall to the bottom or are sucked to the sponge filters so they are easier for the fry to eat than live freshly hatch bbs.
I hope I could get as many species to spawn as Dale. I am envious of your success rates, Dale.

Re: L-333 breeder set up and fry
Thanks Larry, I`ll put them together then. I have them for about 6 months and they are now fully matured. I`ll let them settle in for a while to get used to the new tank and then I try to trigger them.
I heard they are a bit more difficult to spawn then Hypancitrus species. So far I`ve successfully spawned L270 without any afford from my side, I just did regular water changes. Unfortunately I`ve lost my only female and got left with 4 males.

Re: L-333 breeder set up and fry
More fry. I almost lost the breeding group due to a leak in their tank. Luckily, the tank only leaked down til there was about 6-7" of water left.

May I know what is the temperature of your tank?
