Yeah, i thought nigrita because the shop i got them from sold them to me as African Lace Catfish but i didnt think they looked like the other pics of that fish that i saw. i didnt know if maybe my fish had some kind of juvenile patterning.

I think nigrita do have a juvenile pattern similar to this but the adipose fin seems too large as well as the spotsi didnt know if maybe my fish had some kind of juvenile patterning.

It appears to belong to the waterloti complex but as to exactly what it is, i can't say until all species are described. I would treat it as waterloti in terms of husbandry though.

I was thinking along those lines as well... let it grow for a few months or a year and bring it up again as It would be interesting to see as it gets olderIt appears to belong to the waterloti complex but as to exactly what it is, i can't say until all species are described.

I could see it maybe developing into this as time goes by from this possible juvi stage...there is quite a difference in size in the adipose fin and even the shape of the humeral process...it would be nice to see it again as it gets older.Looks quite similar to the one in this thread:

Re: Picked up some 2 inch long possible Synodontis nigrita?
I feel Synodontis Nigrita though supposedly one of the commoner Syno's is in reality not properly known ! i.e. there are so many pics of clearly different fish under the Nigrita label ! i feel i had this fish a while back , grew it on for a while and ended up giving it to Yorshire Pud ' er Yorkshire David i picked it out of a tank full of Nigrita , because it so obviously was'nt ! by that i mean the other fish in the tank were of a different shape and had smaller more spaced out spots , i'm no Syno expert BUT i heard that the humeral proccess was a good way of telling Synos apart
P.S i wonder if anyone here at Planet cat could put a pic of a S.Nigrita , and say with hand on heart this is IT i appreciate there are varients but surely there must be a general theme to Nigrita

Hi Birger , to be honest i'm not really sure , i suppose what i'm meaning is there could be half a dozen fishes under the Nigrita label , in other words a lot of different Syno sp/s being lumped under this name , some obviously very different to each other , i.e definitly cant all be Nigrita what are your views

Re: Picked up some 2 inch long possible Synodontis nigrita?
I think a lot of fish get accidently lumped together as nigrita or Lace Catfish by suppliers as it is a known name but I do not think there is too much confusion as to what is a proper Synodontis nigrita once one looks for it. As juveniles there are others that look sort of similar but again once one actually looks a bit the nigrita can be distinguished. Not like the waterloti or obesus/rebeli complexes which may have a number of different species yet

I always thought Robbianus had a look of Nigrita , but was more reddish in colour , as opposed to greyish brown , both nice fish really
going back to the fish pic on this thread , to me it looks very different to Nigrita i m o .

Re: Picked up some 2 inch long possible Synodontis nigrita?
My opinion is that fish in this thread is not either waterloti or nigrita. Not waterloti because dorsal fin is too long and shape of fish is too high. I have 17 Synodontis cf. waterloti juvenile in my tank now and all those fishes looks pretty different than fish in this thread. There is many coloration of juvenile nigrita but I don't think this is nigrita. For juvenile fish its very hard to say what is the specie 100% but I really hope its not any h-syno.
About differences between nigrita and robbianus. I have tried to study and visit places where is brown/dark synos to know how to recognize robbianus from other species. While ago I was almost sure how to do it but then one of my very look a like robbianus grew up 14cm lenght, and still growing, so it cant be robbianus. There is also blond form of robbianus that is very much same than juvenile nigrita. My opinion is that time is only way to solve if its really robbianus, when your robbianus grows more than 12-13cm it is some other brown syno.

Re: Picked up some 2 inch long possible Synodontis nigrita?
I agree with piggy's view that some people tend to look at a light (when young) or dark (when older) spotted Syno and if they cant definitely ID it they lump it with nigrita.
As it is currently viewed S. nigrita is present across a vast area, including lots of major river systems. The possibility that they are not all nigrita is highlighted by S. fascipinna. This was deemed a synonym of nigrita but then revalidated. S. ornata (of Pappenheim, not the Boulenger one) is also another possible case of a similar species being lumped with nigrita.
The true nigrita tends to have a long and pointed humeral process. I too doubt whether all the fish on the nigrita catelog are al nigrita. The fish at the begining of this thread looks more like a juvenile robbianus to me, but we need to see it as an adult to be sure.
