Please help ID a Syno

HI again,
I bought this fella at Patsmart. Normally I don't buy anything from chains like that but he was so adorable!! I bought him under the name Synodontis longirostris, which I don't believe. He was $14.99 well worth it I believe.

Looks to be a hybrid similar to this

may be ocellifer x eupterus

I hope someone will prove me wrong...

BTW, Is there anyone out there that can tell me how BIG it might get??? I'm really hoping it wasn't crossed with S. eupterus! But once again, I have a really bad feelin about that.

If it is eupterus x ocellifer they are both in that 7 to 8 inch range

If part longirostris it could get bigger

Was it sold as a S.longirostris?

yes... yes it was. Should I be concerned?? It's in a 20High now, but it will join my 7" S. eupterus in my 55 when it gets bigger. I'll get a 75 to house him, but I really don't want to!!

OK!!!! A very good reason to research a catfish before you buy it!! If I had known that S. longirostris gets to 22" I would have never even considered buying it!! I hope that I won't have to rehome it (especially with that other post going on)!!! I like to keep my fish for the long haul. I really hope it's NOT part longirostris!!

These fish are also here in the U.K. under the Synodontis longirostris name. When small they do look like that specie but as they grow, the one in my care has grown from under 2" to 6" in less than 14 months, take on more of a 'washed out' ocellifer look. Take care if mixing with a eupterus as your 'longirostris' will easily be dominated by this much stronger fish.

Thanx for the advice. So you're saying that it may only reach a total length of about 6"?? Then that also leads me to assume that it may be S.eupterus X S.ocellifer!! I did think mine had a short snout. Now I'm just hoping to see what kind of growth explosion I get from it and will continue to pray it stays small. I will be very careful putting it with my eupterus, if need be, it already harasses my Ptergoplichthys joselimaianus.

sounds to me like that is how much it grew in that time not that it stopped growing...it probably has more growing to do

I worded it like that because 14 months is a long time to grow only 4". My eupterus grew from 2" to 7" in no more than 5 months. I was figuring that this rate of growth is normal for the genus.

Although these 'longirostris' do have the look of a eupterus about them I don't think that eupterus is in their 'bloodline' as the body stays to slim - or at least it has in mine. My 'longirostris' has the competition of a Synodontis community around 'him' so may not have grown, as yet, as fast as 'he' would have done as a 'lone Synodontis' in a cichlid or mixed community.
