Pregs or just fat?

Post by favouriteslave »

Ok I have 3 baby albino aenues. When I say baby I don't know exactly how old but they are almost 1 inch in length each. Two of them look like they have stuffed their tummys to the brim and are bulging with lumps all over. The only thing in the tank all day was a tiny part of an algae wafer that they all fed on. Only these two albinos have the lumps all over. I have peppers that appear to be spawning but don't seem to have any lumps. Do I need to call Overeater's anonymous on these two or is it possible they are carrying eggs at this young stage?

Right now they are SO active I cant get any pics, I've tried. Normally I feed them bottom feeder sinking wafers or shrimp pellets. Every so often they get an algae wafer and they go crazy over it. About twice a week they get frozen brine shrimp, flake or bloodworms. I try to change it up every day.

I wouldn't be too worried about 1" fish looking fat after feeding- they're still growing therefore I let all my juvenile fish, especially catfish, eat pretty much as much they want and they often swell up like golf balls; mine usually look thin again the next morning! I'd doubt it's eggs at that size, unless the fish are stunted- some individuals might top out at 1.5" size whilst others will reach not far short of 3" (total length), so in that case it COULD be eggs. I would be a bit worried about a "lumpy" stomach though if they've just been eating algae wafers- it could be lumps of food but algae wafers break up pretty small- keep an eye on them and update us with progress.

Well seeing as they are very transparent I think was was seeing food because I cut back a little and they are looking more normal. They are juvies and just go crazy on the food whereas my mature ones don't tend to do that. Although being juvies I'm not going to worry about them overeating right now. Back to our regularly schedule twice daily feeding!
