How big is it and how big will it get?

Thanks .... that one is about 16" SL and I wouldn't expect him to grow bigger then about 22"-24".

I have 2 of them and they seem fairly slow growing compared to TSN's.

This tiggy shares a tank with his buddy the Juri' who is about the same size but more thickly built.





My other tig is slightly smaller and he also shares a tank with a juri of the same size.





He's just as nice really ....

He does a very excellent job with his tanks and looking after his fish. They get a %40 water change twice per week, week in and week out.

Do they really eat out of their food bowl?

Yes they do, otherwise their worms and cut fish bits would disappear into the gravel. The feeding bowl makes it much easier to see exactly what they have eaten as I believe its important to keep the dreaded BOFDS away which is how about 90% of these fish get killed in captivity.

I have all your target species and tig's are my favorite of all fish ... I hope they never become extinct as then I'd have to risk hormones on them to breed them.

BOFDS = Brachyplatystoma Overfeeding Death Syndrome a unfortunately way too common occurrence with people who don't understand that these fish are not designed to feed every day.

They like huge clumps of live blackworms and big juicy earthworms as well as Barbs, Discus Culls, Other culls etc etc

Wow your Juruense are super, I think they are fab fish, this one died a horrible death from a heater burn, I nearly gave up fishkeeping after this it was terrible.

I never use internal heaters with big cats anymore and I never will again. It's hard to believe the fish just sat there while this happened.

Thanks - being in the uk i need to look up what blackworms are but am not surprised about them enjoying earthworms - most fish love these if you present them in the right way (whole, chopped, or liquidised)

If you don't touch it but hold it for a while you'll get the same burns. The difference is that you've (been) learnt to let go.....

DIY heater guard for large fish.
Take a trip to the local hardware or plumbers store and purchase a metre length of plastic waste pipe of sufficient diameter that allows your heater to slip easily in side of it, and that would still leave a 5 to 10 mm gap around it , cut it to the same length as your heater, then drill loads of 8mm holes all over it. and there you have a home made heater guard.
Sometimes the fish takes a nap along side a heater that is not on, and receives a burn when the thermostat turns the heater on. Heaters become quite hot very quickly.
BTW When I was young, At home we had a solid fuel open fire, and I used to like sitting with my bare feet as close to the fire as I thought was comfortable. Unfortunately when my father came into the room, I would get a telling off, because although I thought the heat was comfortable and bearable, he said I would end up with sore feet similar to that of sun burn. I listened my sister didnt one cold day she fell asleep in front of the fire and got sore toes.

A form of DIY heater guard would be a piece of PVC (water pipe at your local Home Depot or some such) that is a bit bigger than the heater (e.g. 1-1.5" outer diameter pipe), with lots of fairly large holes [8mm, 3/8" seems about right] drilled in the pipe to allow water flow around the heater. Ideally, you'd want to place the heater such that some forced water flows across the heater, ensuring good water flow.

If you want to go a bit more advanced, you may want to form some sort of "forced water flow" where you actually pump cool water through a pipe that holds the heater. You probably don't want a FAST flow - the smallest power-head you can get will probably be plenty. In this case, you only want two holes - one for inlent and one for outlet of the water. Using a "T" junction with small diameter may help to attach a hose or something to connect the power-head to the pipe.

Algarde make a heater suction cup, that has a adjustable plastic zip tag attached to them and come in packs of two. Just thread each of the zip tags through two of the holes that you have drilled, and attach the suction cups; you can then position the heater guard anywhere you require it in the tank.

When I was responsible for the care of many different species of large fish, as part of my employment.
We utilised in some of our aquariums ‘homemade’ heater guards of a design mentioned in my earlier post, we actually tried out a number of 'homemade designs' to see if we could improve upon the basic design; yet it soon became apparent that a “forced water flow” type, akin to matsp suggestion; were unsuitable for fish that got “spooked” easily; [eg: - as often is the case with members of the pangasiidae family of catfish]; as it was another object upon which the fish could receive injuries to its self whilst darting about. Coupled with our observations, that due to the convection of hot to cold water around and through the heater and heater guard, it did not effect the ambient water temperature to such degree that it was ‘overall beneficial’ to have any type of “forced water flow” heater guard system. Needless to say sometimes the most basic of designs is often the best.

The only 100% effective way of protecting a fish from burns is having the heater outside the tank. Either a inline heater, a heater in a sump or using Eheim Thermofilters. Since the release of the Pro3 2180 Thermofilter I've been using them without any problems and I've got 9 of them. For big tanks I use inline Titanium Aquaculture heaters like the 6kw Jayco but not many people need to heat a 16000 liter tank so the Eheim thermo's will handle 98% of most peoples tanks.
