Mystus leucophasis
Mystus leucophasis
I just bought one of these fish, have been looking for one for some time now. I was wondering if anyone here had any experiance with them that they could share. I read over the Cat-elog profile and did a search on them but there isen't much on the web about them it seems.

Have you seen the March 2000 Catfish of the Month article by Shane Linder, on this site? Note the sentence about how they can 'wreak total havoc' in a community tank.
In my experience they're fine with similar-sized fish, or larger, but very quarrelsome amongst themselves.

Yes, I have read that article. But thanks all the same. He's not in a community tank. He's housed with an oscar, pictus cat and a Pimelodus albofasciatus.Chrysichthys wrote:Have you seen the March 2000 Catfish of the Month article by Shane Linder, on this site? I have one of these guys and he does just fine with my Oscar, Green Terror, Red Jewel, and Bala Shark. He is a total pig when it comes to food, though. When I feed my fish their pellets, the Asian U.D. comes out of his hiding place and snatches up to 8 pellets at once. The one I currently have is pretty docile... doesn't seem to bother the other fish too much, but I had another one a few months ago that was HIGHLY aggressive. He would rather stay up all day and chase the other fish around relentlessly rather than sleep during the day like they are supposed to. I had to get rid of him because he wouldn't let anyone else eat as he was nearly full-grown and all my other fish were just juvies. The one I have now grew up with my other fish and he is cool. Beautiful fish.
Mine has since been moved to a 40g, the oscar started picking on it and the other catfish when they were in the 75g. I moved the two pim cats and the Asian U.D. into the 40g along with a pair of bushynoses. At first the U.D. would pick on the P. albofasciatus constantly. The pim had torn fins and was chased out of ever hiding place he tried to seek shelter in. Since then a pecking order seems to have been established and the picking has stopped. Granted I cannot watch them at night while I'm asleep and they are active but the pims fins have healed completely and he seems a lot less frantic.

In response to a PM I got about this species, does grow to at least around 12" and that is from seeing one that big in person.

I purchased two M. Leuophses once
They wer both about two-3 inches .I had a school of adult corys in that tank and a few cichlds. come the next morning I had one dead cory and one Cory which was still alive but which had part of its snout and the top of its head eaten away. I separated them and the cory problem stopped but that species is verrrrry aggressive at even a small size. I would say tougher cichlids and bigger tough barbs only.
