Are these Farlowella mariaelenae?

Post by petesfish »

I got these two fish from two different sources. This one was mixed in with Farlowella vittata.

This one I just picked up at a club auction.

Both appear to have three rows of belly scutes. Both ~6" long. What other info/photos do I need to make proper ID?

Hi Pete,

Typically for F.mariaelenae is the short snout-mouth length compared with the head length and a males snout wich is totally covered with small breeding odontodes.
A photo of the caudal fin can also give a hint.

This shows whole body of first fish including caudal.

I think tail might have had longer tips at one point.

Hi Pete,

The coloration of the caudal fin of the specimen on your photo is similar to the description of RETZER & PAGE for F.mariaelenae.

Thanks very much Norman

Is this the reference you used?

Yes, these are F. mariaelenae. Looking at the first posting, I would hazard to say that the fish in the top photo is female and the lower a male.
