My first tanks :-)

Hi all!

i just wanna share my first 2 tanks i've got.

one is the aqua-40 (about 20l = 5 gallon)
inhere i've got 5 yellow mickey mouse platy's atm (3 male 2 female. got to get some more females and a small sized catfish)

The other tank is my Jewel Rio 180.
Yeah i know what some of you think. Isn't it big for a first time tank? well if i do something i always do it big

i just liked the size of the tank. it fills up my livingroom nicely.
So this is what's living in it atm.
2 Apteronotus albifrons (Africa)
4 Hymenochirus boettgeri (Africa)
6 Megalamphodus sweglesi (South America)
2 Pangasius sutchi (Asia)
10 Paracheirodon axelrodi (South America)
2 Puntius denisonii (Asia)
5 Xiphophorus maculatus (Mid America)
and then the catfish offcourse:
1 Baryancistrus sp. (L018)
1 Baryancistrus sp. (LDA33)
1 Ancistrus ranunculus
1 Panaque maccus probably

The tank will be totally redone during 'buildersbreak' in the summer. (14 days holiday)

I know where you'll be then on July 1: the Limbeurs to find some nice assets.
Apteronotus is from South-America btw

Welcome to pc,
You have a couple of potential problem fish choices.
Pangasius grow to be huge fish and need to go.
The Apteronotus albifrons will fight and inflict severe damage upon each other. It is difficult to keep more than one in a tank over the long time. Otherwise they are a magnificent fish and can become very tame like a pet more than a fish.

the pangasius will go into my 550L or 145 gallon tank same as the apteronotus. they have their territory both and they don't fight at all. one keeps hanging on the left behind the aquaball filter and the other one totally on the right in the saladcrop

but they will go into the big tank later on. and about the pangasius well some say they grow to 20cm (7 inch) other say they grow to 80cm (30 inch)
they don't grow much anymore probably because lack of space but we'll see in the big tank.
the only fish that comes into the big tank are 2 or 3 catfish (medium sized) and maybe some other fish like the red line torpedo's i've got.
we'll see when it's finished. it takes a lot of work and a lot of money. i've started building the tank + cabinet from scratch so it might take some time till it's finished.
Almost finished the cabinet and then it's saving up for an Eheim professional 3 Electronic and all the other goodies i'll need

Think something along the lines of 20-30 times bigger than 550L for a Pangasiidae... Here is a list of them sorted in size-order, and I can assure you that you are 99% sure that have one of the top 5 (although not the top one). They are also active swimmers, so they need good swimming spaces.

I'd suggest you get rid of it now (while you can), rather than later when it's too big to go in a 550l tank.

i'm gonna see on the Limbeurs if i could trade them with someone.
on your list it's this one:
Pangasius hypophthalmus 1300mm (51.2")
so yeah way toooo big. i don't think they should sell it then around here. nobody with this size of thanks

I completely agree. The good thing, I suppose, in this case is that they are not comming from wildcaught stock, but rather from fish-farms (for food production) that sell a few of the small juveniles to the ornamental fish-trade (and I beleive the same applies to for exampel Red-tail Catfish). But it still doesn't make it easier on the owner of these types of fish.

Yes, I think so. I really like the atmosphere overthere. No fishes for me however, because the holiday is getting pretty near and I don't think it's wise to add fishes just before that

I think I'll take the kids along and go for a book - or better - books.
