Scobinancistrus but which one?

Post by Jackster »

I just got a group of these in today and they are in very fine condition.
The only problem is that these were sold to me as Leporacanthicus cf.
galaxias (L007) and it was obvious from a glance that these are not
Vampire catfish. The mouth is totally wrong to start with and since I've
had L14 before, I saw a distinct similarity but could see they are not
Scobinancistrus aureatus (L14) either. Their fright colors really threw
me off at first but after being in the tank for a short time, I started leaning
towards L48 as the correct identification? I could use a little help now to
try and positively identify these catfish. I'm also trying to get the collection
point from the seller, to help in the process.

Thanks much Janne! 8)

I talked with the seller and he said the fish came from Brazil for sure.
He's going to look into the collection point further but he did feel that
these were a different fish than L48. I'm still confused? The fish have no
coloration on the bellies which does seem to differ from the photos of
L48 here, however, the mouth sure looks similar if not exact. Whatever
species they are, they are very hungry and active, and boldly looking for
food even in the light. If anyone else has any ideas on their identification,
they would be greatly appreciated.

They really look like LO28 to me, the mouth on the fish and the patterning looks almost indentical to your plecos;

LO28 mouth;

I think you may have solved the mystery for me. The white belly on these fish
would make me agree with you. Now has L028 been put in with L004?

Final verdict is Scobinancistrus L48. The main difference I see is that the L28
is a shorter stubby fish with a bigger head. I sent photos to a bunch of pleco
dealers/breeders and all have agreed L48. L28 would be full grown at the size
these fish are now, so if they grow any larger that will be another factor to
ID them as L48. Thanks for the help everyone.
