i appologise for the fish gloat but i've been looking for this guy for a loong time, and finally i get a call so i snap one up right away, hes small but perfect. and not shy at all, infact he hides sure, but within 30 seconds of putting food into the tank hes out

hes a greedy lil guy too.

given the small size of currently available fish and the rarity before when halfgrown or fully mature fishes were imported as oddballs, looks like someone managed to breed this species.

maybe by using hormones, maybe in the country of origin by using the "pondbred" methods, maybe both.

it's a popular cat, hence there's money to be made. looks like someone caught on from there.

I would agree, mine is pretty small probably just over 1 inch SL. I am told its wild caught though. but i dunno, i guess ill never know

although i hope it is a tank/pond bred one.

racoll i know what you mean, i've been looking for wone for over a year, couldnt find them, but my local lfs had a batch in last week and this week, first time ive ever seen them myself.

Freshman the jag is just over an inch SL i would say (its not cooperating by staying still long enough to measure yet

)

When he gets a little bigger and "louder" ill drop in the hydrophones see if i cant get some recordings of him.

Mine do breed, no hormones or anything. It came as a very big suprise. This has happened twice as far as I know, first time I didn't believe my eyes and presumed it was something else. The next time left no room for guessing as I caught them in the act, unfortunately I fell asleep and the next morning all the eggs were eaten. Of course it may be that the eggs aren't even fertilized, but there is definately a male and a female involved. They inhabit a empty coconut shell, and it's also the place where they spawn.

I'd have to disagree as the big shops of plenty big ones too. I've seen adults for sale at around £50 each. It's just that a lot of stores won't carry these becuase they don't seel at that size.

Been kicking my self.. I've been wondering if it was because of the heatwave we had, that lasted for about a month when every day the temperature in the tank.. rose? (sorry for my crappy english)by a couple of degrees during the day and by the night time fell back to the normal 24 C... Dunno. It has been somewhat colder for the last three weeks and I haven't seen the catfish do anything out of the ordinary when the temperature has been more stable. Although I'm not usually up and watching fish at 4 am, which is around the time I last saw them in the business. Maybe I'll get to separate those two when my quarantine isn't full of new fish and experiment more with the temperatures. For now I'm not gonna bother the whole tank with a mission that's more likely to fail as far as I've understood. I once read that some german guys had bred these fish in few occasions.. I have to contact my half german friend if he could find the internet article again.
