Cuckoo Catfish

Post by Fishdude »

I was wondering if it would be okay to keep Cuckoo Catfish in a planted tank instead of having a rock set up for cichlids.

No problem, as long as you choose plants that like the same water parameters as the Synos do.

and take care you put something in either the tank (rocks, coral sand, shells for shelldwelling cichlids etc), or the filter (crushed shells, pieces of limestone, pieces of marble etc) to boost the hardiness of the water IF you have a densely planted tank.

adding natriumbicarbonate is also beneficial.

plants can and do lower the amount of calcium in the water and this isn't a good thing when you're dealing with Riftlake fishes, especially when breeding is the aim.
Cuckoo cats are fairly hardy, but the pH shouldn't dip below 7.5 or the hardiness below 8 or so.

ideal would be a ph of about 8 and a hardiness over 10.
