Gerry's recommendations are good one. I think having different plecos that like algae are useful as are the species that prefer meatier foods. They both help take care of foods missed by the large Cichlids.
If you are starting out with subadult Cichlids, a school of Pictus Cats will be OK, too. If Cichlids grow up with them they will have learned that trying to eat a Pictus is a bad idea and will leave them alone.
