Trying to identify a catfish i saw in LFS a long time ago

Hi

I know this is a long shot but i figure its worth a try.

I saw this catfish in a tank it was maybe 200 - 300mm in length, it looked quite similar to the larger bumblebee cats but it seemed much more stocky in build to the extent that at the time i described it as a belly with a mouth and a few token gesture fins(long time ago my mind may be playing tricks on me).

The shop keeper warned about getting too close as it would pounce at the glass to an extent that worried him. he then showed off this catfish eating, i was amazed at the ferocity of the fish.
Im a long term large cichlid keeper so am used to aggressive fish but this was just a born n bred killing machine.

ive only really kept Loricariids and dorads so have very little knowledge of other catfish.

i guess my question is this, are the larger bumblbees this agressive? does my description sound like on or any other catfish for that matter.

The memory has stayed with me to the extent that i want to have one, but i havent got a clue what it was, pseudopim of somekind?

Probably a pseudopimelodid of some kind.

My guess would be some kind of .

Thank you very much, i think that may be the one. after reading the species info for the apurensis its says one owner lost a 10 inch ciclid due to the cat trying to eat it!

Thanks, i now have a name to chase.

Any tips on keeping these little beasties?

mininmum tank size? (dimensions please, gallons/litres confuse me)
and what size should i expect them to get? i was expecting 12-14 inch but some people seem to say up to 24 inch?
also how much do small ones cost in the UK?

They have some Pseudopims that look very much like this in Pier Aquatics in Wigan which from your location should be relatively near you. They had 3 or 4 on Thursday and if I remember rightly they were £38 each.

Pseudopimelodus fowleri is a predatory catfish and is suitable for a species only tank, to be honest it doesnt tolerate its own kind let alone a. n. other. species, so it probably should be labeled a specimen only tank; as even fishes larger than itself, can become a target..
However; saying that, check with Neil at peir to see if Rays would be safe with it; as he is quite knowledgeable on both accounts.

Nice to here that Pier are still going strong, i remember doing roadtrips down there what must be 15 - 20 years ago.
