Otocinclus: schooling or is one okay?

Post by gerilyn »

I'm planning to get a Dwarf Otocinclus, either O. sp. or O. arnoldi. I'd prefer to get just one. Are they okay as individuals? They don't appear to hang out together.

Despite your observation, they should really be kept in groups. You'll see that they sort of stick together most of the time. Single specimen don't last long, although there are of course exceptions to the rule.

But these are in a very huge tank. You could certainly do with a few less

What's the difference (if any) between a school & shoal?

Mostly noticable differences spelling and which side of the Atlantic tells which is the most likely to be used, but both are roughly meaning the same thing (fish in a group). If you want to know the exact difference, it's in the Glossary (In the Help! menu).
