Breeding Information - Maximum species size for 500L
Hi all,
I'm about to proceed with a long term breeding project in my 500l tank (150 x 60 x 60cm).
I have not yet concluded the precise species, but I have a short list of candidates to choose from.
One aspect that concerns me is, to what max size (SL) do you think a breeding project would be viable.
Basically I'd like to have at least 6 individuals, but I'm currently concerned what the max size of each should be, given the available space. For example I obviously don't believe a big species like Scobinancistrus or Pseudacanthicus can be bred in 500l, but from 15 to 20 cm I really don't know where to stand. Maybe 4 individuals of 20cm is not too much...
Help from the breeding experts really is appreciatted. For example I noticed several people keep one of my candidates (L128 ~ 18cm) but I have no idea on what their tank sizes recommendations would be for 6 individuals.
(Surely not the 5000L the Berlin Zoo used...I hope)
Best Regards,
Francisco

Was the question that stupid?
I'm really someone who reads a lot on this forum, but rarely writes, since I have so much more to learn than to teach... and as so I really hate posting just to move back up , but I feel unless I do pull up my previous post, I will never get an answer.
Barbie, Yannfulliquet, Janne Ekström (all keepers of L128, I presume) - among others that surely can help me on this one - would you please be so kind as to give me your opinions on the previous one?
Where would you draw the line, regarding max size?
Cheers,
Francisco

Hello Francisco
If you really would like to breed, I would recommend you some other species.
Forget L128. You will probably never achieve any success here.
First thing: describe your tank.
Waterparametres, Temperature, current, tankmates etc etc.
You see, if you would like to have a full planted tank, planteating species like L128 would be a bad choice.
If you have discus, it would be a bad idea with herbivore catfishes - since they would get to much meat.
Personally I like smaller catfishes - therefore a good group
but we are all different.
If you say round 15 cm - you could have more individuals and better chance to breed.
Best regards
Line

Ok, so there's 403 species of Loricariidae in the Cat-eLog that are less than the arbitrarily choosen limit of 250mm...
If we eliminate the ones that are smaller than 100mm, we get 324 species. Still quite a bit of choice, don't you think...
As Line points out, temperature may eliminate choices further, as would the desired diet if you are planning to mix other species in the same tank.
I know that most of Janne's breeding is going on in tanks that are 90 x 40 x 40 and thus around 130 liter - I don't know if he has other bigger tanks too...
