Syno Multi BABIES!!!! Totally Sweet
Syno Multi BABIES!!!! Totally Sweet
Okay So I have two Syno Multi's in my tank of cichlids. I had NO IDEA that they would breed. I didn't even know that they were male and female. ANyway I was looking in the tank last night and saw 3 little cats swimming around. I'M TOTALLY SIKED!!!!!!
Except one of my adult cats is NO WHERE to be found. I looked under rocks and every nook I knew about. I need to clean the tank tonight so I'll look for her more. Could something have happened to her after she laid the eggs? There is only 2 adult syno's in the tank......could that have posed a problem?
I don't know. I just pray I find her tonight but we'll see.
SO with the babies. Whats the best thing to do? There are three in a 55 gallon with ALL my other cichleds. I do have a 10 gallon with some cichlid fry in it. Should I move them?
Let me know.

If the baby multi's made it this far on their own, they should be alright in the main tank, Their spines are good defense against most would-be predators, though I did once have an ornate bicher that chowed down several juvie S. eupterus, one went down tail-first.
Of course if it was me, I'd tear the tank apart, and move 'em out to a fry tank for grow-out.
As for only having 2 adult multi's, that could be a problem for the female. They're schooling fish by nature, and 2 isn't a good number for any schooling fish, particularly relatively aggressive species like multi's.

COol well. Thanks for the information. I cleaned and searched my tank and one of my Multi's is definately gone.
I did have a power outage recently like 2 weeks ago and she could have died then and then the rest may have eaten her cause I don't even have a body. Anyway very sad but very neat she left 3 babies. I love em too. They are so awesome.
I'm going to buy another female to see if I can continue to breed them. and raise these three fry!!

Hey,
As you said the reason why one of your multis is dead could be power outage but keep in mind what toddnbecka said. 2 is very bad number for s. multi.
Please, take a look on this. There you will find some useful info also about sexing synodontis.
Regards.

My understanding is that that the missing e in pleco is based on a superstition and I don't know but I think the thing about Cichlid is out of derogatory snobbery directed at what hardcore catfish folks view as an inferior fish compared to the"noble" catfish.
I'm sure one of the "old ones" among the membership have the true story.

OK, a humerously derogatory reference to Cichlids.
I breed discus as well as catfish. I just won't have anything to do with G**dfish or African Cichlids.
If I wanted gumball colored fish I'd buy a gumball machine instead. Gumballs taste better and don't waste valuable tankspace
