New L134

Post by ljse »

I got a new L134 yesterday. He was in the lfs for over 3 weeks and looks healthy. He's in a 20 long with a rio 600 powerhead, sand, caves and plants. The temp is 80. Yesterday I fed him a sweet potato, and I plan on feeding him fresh vegetables and hikari algae wafers. How often should he get meaty foods?

It took me awhile to get a healthy group but I have 7 L134's doing well. All I have ever seen them eat were animal based protein rich foods. They eat Tetra Color Bits, Earthworm pellets, frozen bloodworms and Live blackworms. I toss a few algae wafers in the tank for the large trio of bushnoses but I have not seem the L134's touch them.
Maybe they do eat some veggies but not that I can tell.
I'm pretty sure you will find yours will go for some frozen blood worms without hesitation. I wouldn't wait too long in hopes it will develop a taste for veggies.
There are only Hypancistrus, Peckoltias, a trio of reg bushynoses and Ten Heckel discus in this tank.

Thanks, I didnt see mine eat the wafer, it was spread across the tank, but it didn't look like any was missing so it was most likely just the current. He didn't touch the sweet potato either. Tonight I will try bloodworms.

He seems pretty active and I can see him moving around after lights out.

I have a 75 gallon with a wide assortment of fancy plecos. I don't have the L-134 but a friend of mine does. He feeds it fresh yellow squash and fresh zuccini which it seems to love. Some of the foods I feed my plecos include limabeans shrimp pellets and occationally carnivore pellets. I have fed the sweet potatoes to my plecos and noticed that they usualy wait for a day before they start eating it. :)

I put the potato in the microwave for 30 seconds. My clown plec goes for it after a few minutes.

Other than my bushynoses all my plecos eat mainly mearty foods. I have about 6 each of L66,L333,L318,7- L134, 8- L204
12-L260 and 4-Peckoltia vitatta. 4-L46 soon. The Peckoltias only barely show any interest in vegetable foods but are interested in only meaty foods. The Hypancistrus are confirmed carnivores.
Their diet makes them welcome additions to my discus tanks because they eat the same foods as the discus and find all the loose scraps.

I gave him a shrimp pellet and it looks like he ate it. He was on the glass by the powerhead output and he has a nicely rounded belly.

What is the most accurate way of sexing L134's?

The L134 are sexed just like the other plecos. The easiest way is to view a group of mature fish from above. The males are more heavily covered with well developed odonotodes.Females are broad in the beam and males ae more tapered in profile. Young fish are not easy to sex.
There are better guidelines under the breeding articles in Shane's World breeding section that provide specific guidelines.

On aquariumboard, I was told that he looks more like an L66 or an L333 because of the pattern. What do you think?
